Living Car Free - Good news, for a change

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
My credit union is putting in a new branch right downtown, which will save me a 12 mile round trip in heavy traffic a couple times a week.
I just wanted to share with people who would understand how cool this is! :)
That is good news. Credit unions rock. But why did you have to travel there twice a week?

I no longer go to the bank unless it is to get into the Safe deposit box. I pay bills by computer or smart phone. I transfer money and have direct deposit. But still my bank is only 3 or 4 miles away. Saving 12 miles would be a great plus however.
My library branch is now under renovation, which seems to be almost 3 years long. The branch moved to a mall several miles away and not easily accessible by bike. So I started using the downtown library... a full 10 mile roundtrip.
Of course, I batch a number of things in my downtown trip... visit the bike co-op, go to the library, pick up some fancy tea... but it will be very nice when my library moves back to the old branch just 1 mile from my house.

I have both credit union and regular bank accounts. I have graced the credit union with my presence once in the past couple of years. The bank is about 1.5 miles from the house, so I keep my safe deposit box there.

That has got to be quite a relief.

I guess I'm a luddite when it comes to banking services. I like to have the cash in my hands instead of plastic, but I feel like I spend too much when I use ATMs.
One time I actually told a friend, "My life would be perfect if the credit union was closer to my house." I knew this because my old house was only 2 miles from the dredit union. When i moved last year, I thought long and hard about the location. The distance of the credit union was the only drawback I could see to the new location, but I went ahead with the move anyway.

It is a six mile min. round trip to go anywhere from my house. I mean like stores, banks, services,ect... I do have neighbors closer than that.
Does anybody else have a little good news to share?

I have some good news to share: I keep gradually losing weight. I took a 4-year leave of absence from my bike while changing careers from commercial and land real estate brokerage, into marina management. During that time I got soft and flabby, put on weight, and had to have a stent put in my heart. A year ago I got reunited with my awesome Xizang mountain bike, started building my strength back up, and I see my weight is way down.
I don't want to be separated from my Lady Xizang ever again. I've even thought about being buried with her - but that wouldn't be fair to her!
Yeah, boys and girls. Keep up the bike riding. Don't ever let yourselves get separated from your favorite bike. And don't get stents put in your chest!

It sounds like the stents were a wake-up call and you have a pretty healthy lifestyle now. (Except I'm not sure how healthy your attachment to your bike is! ;))
I had stents put in about 10 years ago and it woke me up too. Not only the bike and a better diet, but I finally quit smoking about 8 years ago. Unfortunately I do keep gaining the weight back, but at least I gain with healthy food instead of junk food.
Funny that a heart attack could be one of the best things that ever happened to me! :D

Just returned from a 110 mile roundtrip visit to the nearest state park. Took me two days.
We used to have a state park that was only 25 mile roundtrip, but they closed it due to flooding (the 100-year-flood every two years).

This makes me pensive as to what a real 100-year-flood would be like.

Dunno but both of my houses are on very high ground and if they flood someone better have an ark handy...

Yeah and what would our climate be like if climate change were a fact and not the delusional thinking of all those scientists

You guys do realize that your CO-2 emissions are responsible for global warming, don't you? I mean, when you're out there cranking away on your bike, huffing and puffing, just think of all the CO-2 you're exhaling into the atmosphere!
(nevermind Al Gore's private jet - that's exempted)
Nice morning. I'm on vacation this week. Rode the bike 10mi round-trip for a marriage-counseling session, which was productive. After I got back home I walked 1/2 mile to the bank, got some papers worked up, walked another 1/2 mile to the post office to mail them, walked across the street and had a Mocha at the new coffee shop, and walked the mile back home. I felt a little smile on my face the whole way.
Unfortunately, this afternoon I had to drive 20 miles RT for my piano lesson. I could ride, but I'd have to take a towel and put a plastic cover on the piano stool because of the sweat (95F today!). I stopped by Paul's market for some veggies and bread. It was the first time in the car since Friday. The more I ride the bike the more I dislike like the anxiety I feel when driving. The enormity of the power in the car's engine is difficult to keep in check and I find myself being aggressive to other drivers.

Yep, the old cliche is true about bikes and walking: "Getting there is half the fun."
