Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - White Industries SS crankset

What are the thoughts on the WI SS crankset? A friend of mine is selling his 5 month old crank + WI freewill for a good deal. Did some searching and only old threads came up. Are the newer ones still prone to ring flex ?

The WI SS crankset is great for SS, bad for fixed. Its stiff, looks nice, and the chainring maintains equal chain tension throughout the rotation. However, there is a major design flaw....the chainring is held on by a lockring. When riding a fixed gear, the tiny amount of back and forth play slowly loosens the lockring. I have contacted WI about this problem and they insist that a small amount of play is normal. A bit of locktight on the lockring fixes the problem, but a better solution would be to use a different crank without the design flaw. What also annoys me is that you have to remove the right crank arm to tighten and/or remove the lockring. Its not wise to remove square taper cranks from the spindle often, because it will eventually bottom out and then your crank is trash. If your lockring keeps loosening, or you change your chainring often, don't expect your cranks to last very long.


If all you intend to ride is SS (and don't plan on changing your chainring often), then none of this matters since the torque is unidirectional. Otherwise buy something different.

i have a double on my crosscheck and the quality is unmatched.

hmm this crank also doesn't come in 165mm length...another reason why it is best used on SS applications (not that 165 is essential for all FG bikes, but it is obviously a popular length for FG/track bikes)

this crank seems more widely used in SS MTB applications....but what the hey...run what ya brung, it's a cool and well done piece of kit.
