Well, this IS the fixed gear forum, so....almost everyone's going to say yes. However, this is just such a broad question that no one is really going to answer.

Airbrushkid

Yes it says it's a fixie gear forum. But I see bmx bikes in this forum. And I thought that fixies where bikes using road bike frames with fixed gears and no brakes?

Because if you dont ride a fixed gear, single speed or are not inquiring information about such then you shouldnt be in this forum. That thread is a thread for people new to fixed gears or single speeds also known as you. Its a dumb question. And no, I'm not trying to be a smart ass.

In response to OPs completely random and unnecessary question.
None, none at all. Every single one of us in fixed/ss are riding single speeds.

Since I'm a good person and hoping to come back in my next life as something relatively high on the food chain, I'll actually answer the OP's question.

This forum is for people who ride fixed gear or single speed bikes. Fixed gear is defined as a bike that does not have a freewheel and cannot coast because the cog is fixed to the rear hub. A single speed is a bike that can coast, but still has only one gear. Neither definition has anything to do with brakes, handlebar choice, color of rims, or the rider's collection of white belts and messenger bags. It's all about the drivetrain.

I'd say the majority of the people who post here on a regular basis ride fixed gear bikes as their main ride or at least own one. Some ride converted road bikes. Others ride genuine track bikes. A few ride purpose built "urban" fixed gear bikes known as "tarck" bikes, although many consider that a term of derision.

Most people here ride their bikes for transportation. A few claim to be messengers. Some like to do tricks like barspins and ... well barspins. I don't think there are any other tricks. A lot of discussion takes place here regarding style and how bikes look. Also used to be a lot of talk about whether or not a fixed gear bike should have a brake. Nobody seems to agree on anything though, except that a fixed gear bike can't coast.

Sometimes I walk my bike on city streets in an attempt to pick up chix. I'm way too scared to actually ride it.

Why is everyone saying this is a FG forum? Does the name of the forum not validate his question? I USED to ride SINGLE SPEED ftw.

Maybe theres like some people in here that, like, um...ride Singlespeed maybe?

He said he's new. HE ONLY HAS 6 POSTS. And a new person I WOULD THINK...would take the name of the forum to mean that there just MIGHT, just might, you know, a little chance, be single speed riders here.

So let me try to understand...ss and fg ARE singlespeeds....trackbikes and tarckbikes are in fg only...brakes are optional with fg bikes...tarcks have sloping toptubes...traditional trackbikes do not have sloping toptubes...ss freewheels are for trickin and cruising and brakes are mandatory...most hardcore trackbikes are fg/fg...some trackbikes are fg/ss...ss means freewheel...some ride clippless, some ride clipped...and we haven't even addressed stems and handlebars:eek:

I ride fixed, free, and multi....its all good!!! :ride:

Some of your observations are incorrect. I'm too lazy to point out which ones.

Quick glossary:

Single speed: Any bike with only one gear. On this forum, it generally applies to bikes that have one gear and a freewheel that allows coasting. Popular these days with mountain bikes.
Fixed Gear: Any single speed bike where the cog is directly attached to the rear hub. Includes road, track and tarck bikes. In theory also includes unicycles and Big Wheels.
Track bike: A bike that is specifically designed for track racing. Different geometry than a road bike. Has no brakes and sometimes not even the drillings to attach one.
Tarck bike: A fixed gear road or track bike that has been gayed up with candy colored rims (often arrospok), chopped riser bars, is often too small for the rider as not to rip one's skinny jeans while getting on it.

S that has been gayed up with candy colored rims.

Please try to use less offensive vocabulary in the future. I know it's become pretty instilled in most of our generations language as meaning lame or whatever, but please try to make an effort to remove it from your vocabulary.

If I meant lame, I would have said lame. I actually meant gay. A GMC Yukon with spinner rims is lame. Burning Korans in Florida is lame. A recumbant on a bike path is lame. But a lot of tarck bikes ....

What did the word mean before 'lame'? In my native language, 'gøy' mean happy or joyous. I thought that is the original in English also.

Also, I travel to my job everyday on a fixed gear. (I say that instead of 'fixie' because that word sound too happy and joyous).
