What size wrench do you use to get the pedals off an old Raleigh? I tried a 9/16" but it was too small.

Argh -- those damned Whitworths. I just measured mine with the calipers, and got just a shade over 5/8" (16mm). A loose-fitting 5/8 should work -- if it's thin enough. My 5/8 spanner is too thick to fit, so I've always used a small adjustable crescent on mine.
