Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - candy color powder vs liquid

A local bike painter here quoted me $200 for a candy powder coat and $400 for a candy liquid coat. Whats the difference? Which will achieve the frame to look like the blue or red Pakes in this photo? It seems like a lot of powder coated frames look dull/flat in color...

Your frame won't match the color of those Pakes with any kind of candy finish..because those pakes aren't candy.

I'd explain why thats relevant to this thread (besides the obvious fact that it wont match), but it will have to wait. I have to be at work in about 6 minutes...and I'm late.

candy doesnt matter either way. he is paying more for the paint cause its more steps. but both results will be the same on a bike (maybe minor differences) powder is MUCH easier to lay on a bike than paint. paint takes ALOT more work than you realize, even for a bike. took me about 6 hours from start to finish to paint my bike with real supplies (hvlp gun, "booth", prepping etc etc etc) but abotu an hour to powdercoat all the parts of a bike and frame if you have an oven big enough.

I think powder coating is somewhat sketchy. Of the frames I have seem most of them have been mediocre at best. The power coat fills the lugs and looks really sloppy. If you get it done be a well respected powder coater it could be fine but I believe that would cost more.

I vote wet paint.

i dont ride lugged frames
i ride aluminum frames, so it doest matter either way to me. pake frames arent lugged either.

My vote is for powder coating. Especially if all you're after is a solid color.

Hmmmm I feel like you could look around more and find a cheaper powder coating service.

cheaper doesnt equal better
if they are media blasting, prepping and powdering with good powder, its about right.

My brother can powdercoat my frame for 50 dollars...

materials alone cost 15 or 20

Ask for a new quote..tell them you changed your mind and want just a base coat/clear coat instead of the candy...
Price should come down a little bit, at least on the paint (vs the candy). Not sure about bike painting cause I have no experience in the area, but in auto painting, the difference between a bc/cc and a 3 stage paint job (candy, pearl, etc) can be between 20%-100% price difference....if not more.
