Threaded headset, as opposed to a threadless headset.

Read this before you buy anything that won't work with your current setup: http://sheldonbrown.com/headsets.html

To answer your question, that chrome thing is part of your headset.

Before buying one, you should determine if you need a JIS or ISO threaded headset. This bike stuff is tricky, huh?

why is the one in the link so much bigger then the one on my bike it almost looks 2x as tall?

There's a top and a bottom.

p.s. if you don't know what it's called, you certainly don't have the tools necessary to install it, which means you either need a knowledgeable friend or an LBS, either of which can help you find a black headset.

My guess would be JIS. Unless you've taken a measurement of the inside of your old crown race using a caliper, you most likely won't know.

ya it must be jis. it is older low end bike just like it says. and i know thw quill is 22.2 so that takes it down to 4 then i know its not a raleigh or ital so it high or low end..so its jis. im 99% sure.

Is this bike, by any chance, a Centurion bike? I just bought one for $150, perfect unused condition, yesterday. It has similar hand-drawn decals similar to your picture. I'm going to convert it to fixed gear too.

Spray painting your headset is such a poor idea.

What Centurion if you don't mind my asking? Is it posted around here somewhere?

Welll...I pretty much code a webpage for everything I do. It's a record. Plus I like coding websites.

If the chrome isn't pitted or rusted, why replace it ?
