Looking at picking up a second tandem for kicking around on trails, gravel roads and such. Prob look for a used bike that doesn't break the bank. Have no idea where to start, i.e. Brand, model, necessary upgrades..... Won't be a high use bike, but more than casual use.

Any thoughts or suggestions welcome.

There are many off road tandems to choose from, both new and used.

One the best values in my opinion is a Cannondale. Used Cannondale MT's can purchased used in $1000 range.

If this is to much cost, there are always older Gary Fishers and Specialized listed on various used bike listing, Craigslist and eBay. Then again, if you need full suspension, those are available used with most common brand being Ventana.

As far as upgrades, if it's a hardtail a Thudbuster seatpost is good for the back. Front suspension is a touchy subject in regards to the tandem ratted or not tandem rated forks. Discs are nice if you ride areas where they are needed, but well setup rim brakes can work fine also. Obviously each upgrade starts to add cost.
