General Cycling Discussion - Auto Bike rack Wind Deflectors

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I drive a Yukon SUV with a bike rack which will carry 2 Tandems. At normal highway speeds I hear a low level of noise. Will a wind deflector reduce the noise, improve gas economy, reduce bug juice on the bikes?
I had a wind deflector on my old truck, did not seem to do anything at least from keeping bugs from the windshield. In theroy they direct the air flow over the windshield causing bugs and light stuff to flow over. I assume that is where your bikes are, so if they did work the way they are claimed to, you would get more bugs on your bikes. Wind noise, that is a hard one, changing the flow of the air could improve, or worsen the noise.
On the lighter side :D
Maybe you need some of those oval shapped aerodynamic spokes, or how about full wheel disks? Or maybe a faring or even a fully enclosed body. That might cut the noise........:p

Thule (and most others) make a fairing that will come up to the first rack on your roof and this deflects the wind over the rack. They work very well for their intended purpose. However, this only cuts down on noise without the bikes. Like stated, it'll
probably add more bug juice to the bikes.
