Bicycle Mechanics - Creaking Bottom Bracket...

I’m having issues with a creaking bottom bracket. It started after a climb. It occurs when the left pedal goes over the top. I’ve taken it in to 2 different LBS’s, where it was cleaned and relubed. After the first lubing, it started to creak after 25 miles. I then took it to the other place and the creak started again after 15 miles. Talked to the first LBS and the said it might need to be retightened. Took it out today, and it started to creak after about 7 miles. I then switched to some SPD pedals with mountain bike shoes. My main pedals are Speedplay Zeros with a pair of carbon shoes. It seems to creak in proportion to the amount of pressure being applied. More force=louder creak. It’s a carbon Scattante with about 600 miles on it. I’m a 300 plus guy as well, so I drop into my granny gear, trying not to mash.

Any thoughts? Can a BB loosen up in such a sort distance? If so, wouldn't it creak at the beginning of a ride, instead of after it "warms up?"? Could it be a bearing issue already? A crack in the crank or frame? Knock on wood, but it hasn’t been wrecked. Thanks in advance for your thoughts and not beating me up about being a larger rider. Ha Ha…

Don't know, but is there a weight limit on the Scattante carbon frame? Maybe it developed a crack somewhere.

Just because it happens at the same place in your pedal stroke DOES NOT mean the problem is in the BB, crank or pedals. I had the same problem in a carbon frame, it was actually an headset that needed to be cleaned and lubed. It could also be the seatpost creaking in the frame, or the seatpost clamp....try a different saddle and seatpost to start

I had this happen on the 1st generation Trek 5500. Turned out the chainstay had cracked right behind the BB-shell.

Although I've never used this, but teflon plumber's tape is supposed to help quiet a BB.

However, also check the other joints on the bike (seat post, bar clamp, stem) as suggested by Merlin55. I've had creaks that I swore were from A, but turned out to be caused by B. .
