Bicycle Mechanics - Getting gears back on a Nishiki that had a geared hub and no hanger

Looking to convert this bike to one that can carry gear and would like to get it back to a geared bike. It is currently a single speed, not fixed. It has no hanger. I would like to get a triple on the front, so I will need some tensioner of some sort in the rear, unless someone knows of another option. Might go internal on the rear? Not sure? Any ideas on which way to go? Is this not a good idea and be better off getting a used bike that is more suited? I really don't want too many bikes because of the room I have. Already have three.

There are bolt on hangers that worked fine.. requires a horizontal dropout type.
Held on by the axle + a little screw clamp,so it stays in place when you pull the wheel.
Many bikes sold with derailleurs that were thus equipped ,
the horizontal dropout makes them easy IG SS & fixie conversions.

I would buy this (http://aebike.com/page.cfm?action=details&PageID=30&SKU=RD8160). It's a long cage derailieur that has the chain wrap capacity to handle the triple crank as well as a 34 tooth cog on the rear and probably a 36 tooth cog without issue. They come with and without a deraileur hanger as well. This will certainly be a pretty cheap and very effective way to make it happen.

Obviously you will then have to decide what you want to do about shifters and such, but this is deraileur will index with whatever shimano shifters you choose.

Thank you all very much for the ideas. I think I am going to an internal gear hub. It just seems to be the right thing to do for this bike. Not the cheapest, but I don't mind spending on something that I use all the time. Cheaper than a dumb car or in the case of the US a huge SUV.

It's your bike but you do realize the link I gave you was a deraileur with the hanger for 20 bucks? All you need is to get a set of cheap stem or downtube clamp on shifters and you are good. Leave the single up front and go 1x7 or 8 or however many speeds your rear has.

IGH's are great.
If you have the cash to spare, may as well build up a rear wheel with an IGH and get yourself set with a great city/transportation bike.

Thanks guys. I have the 8 speed on there now. Got a used one that was pretty new. I do like it. Heavy, but will ride well in poor winter weather. I will try to get some pics up.
