Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Get on a plane and ride

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

So if you had some time off, some air miles and wanted to go ride somewhere for 3-4 days where would you head?
My lady is heading to Long Island and Manahattan to stay with a friend and I thought about tagging along. taking the new bike out. But then I got thinking about where else would be a hot spot. San Jose? San Fran? Austin?
I can drive to Portland/Seattle and maybe have a place to stay, but hotel/motel would be a consideration anywhere else...
You?

I would want to ride in Berlin, I've always wanted to go to Berlin though...weird obsession that I have.
Other than Berlin, I want to go to Portland...probably the most bike friendly city in all of America, bikes have a lot of rights and it is kind of flat.

Japan!

Yeah, I'm thinking only a few hours on the plane and everyone speaks english. My wife just suggested Vegas and I looked at her funny. It is cheap to get there.
Berlin and Japan would be brilliant. London as well as I have a free place to stay in North London.
Somewhere to just roll around all day...

Ireland would be awesome, beautiful country, lots of hills though, not good for fixed gear.

Speaking of Nevada...
After posting a few shots in the other MUP thread, I recieved more than a few emails, etc asking about some of the riding here in Vegas. Surprising to many people, the riding here is pretty amazing. Tons of climbs (including one that is 17.34 miles with 5000 feet of gain), miles and miles and miles of barely used bike paths and just lots of good, safe riding. Once you get away from the Strip, it is a different world out here. So far there are over 100 miles of MUP type trails and they hope to have almost 200 in the near future.
This was from our ride today. We did about 70 miles total with lots of climbing and about 56 of it on MUPs. Training and riding fast on these is very safe due to almost zero walkers, runners or anyone else for that matter. Just lots and lots of open trail.
Enjoy.

My wife looking out into the valley. This area gets extremely fast and technical with 5%-8% gradients with 180 degree hair pins for a few miles.

This is actually designated bike path, but also doubles as a run off area durning storms. The main MUP just runs right into this around Boulder City and takes you from the lake up to town at about 7%+ grade.

The path even crosses some train tracks. We happen to cross it right when the train came through today!

And another nice path in the Henderson area.

If I had some air miles to burn and wanted to go ride somewhere, I would go to Chicago or Boston. Some of my favorite bicycle bloggers live in those cities.

I'm stuck in a hotel in Montreal with my bike at home all in pieces. I should have a bike day thread on Friday if all goes to plan. A "break in" ride in Vegas is looking good right about now as the rain stealthily approaches.

it's settled. BFSSFG rides Vegas. WHEN?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! but you guys are crazy. I'm not going out into the desert with one of you. Although, you should all fly over to LA for this event http://www.midnightridazz.com/forums.php?topicId=16026

I could leave 3 weeks from now. Quick weekend in Vegas with some BFSSFG freaks might be a blast.

u regulars always got a place to crash in Austin.
Me? Boulder, no doubt about it. Never been, but I'm thinking about moving there for grad school and heard it's great for cycling. Somewhere in the mountains or the West coast.

Boulder is expensive. Probably Iceland, or Scotland. Or where I am now. Or Beverly. Or with anyone here.. I don't really have consistent cycling buddies. Loner cyclist. :[

Holy crap you're right....as cheap as $70.
I'd also love to ride at Marymoor or Alpenrose.

Just recruited my buddy Frank to go down to Vega$ in 3 weeks. We'd split a hotel room/suite with anyone.

Serious? I think that would be the best place to ride. A ride throughout the Golan would be redonk.
I'm a bit biased. After riding my whole life in the swamps of FL, Israel's "heat" isn't so bad....except maybe Eilat and the Negev.

I would love to recreate the Last Crusade scene through the Siq on a bike in a full Indy get up. That would complete my life

The north was painfully humid, but yeah, you're probably used to it. When I was last in the south hiking around the Negev and Elat it was something like 45*C but bone dry, what I'm used to. A ride that ends with a swim in the Red Sea would be blissful

San Francisco.
It's a relatively small "big city" at 7x7 miles (I think). VERY bike friendly. Great public transportation. Lots to do. Great weather. Pricey, though.

I'd probably fly to Portland. Been there before, without a bike. Would like to spend a little more time and do more exploring.
And Ireland, of course.

- Friendly
- Awesome music
- Cheap (after the plane ticket)
- They're usually a few years behind on trends so fixies may still be cool

Before you ever bring your bike on a plane to a different country, be sure you know the laws of that country. The touring subforum is helpful.
