Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - What is everyone's opinion on Nishiki road frames?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

uh, do you have one in question?
they're great. a sport saved my life when a car hit me on it.
my friend just restored an international and it's a GREAT bike.
i've seen olympics and think they're probably about as good as an international depending on what shape they're in, unless they're better.
of course, with metal of that age, it depends entirely on the individual example. thinking of a conversion? may as well know how to relace and dish wheels, otherwise buying new parts makes the idea of a conversion a bad one.

I see them pop up on CL all the time, and I think they're a great platform for a conversion, which I'm guessing are your intentions.

I'm asking because I have a Gitane from the same time frame, and it just doesn't have a very solid feel to it. The frame is creaky and obviously cheaply made because the threads are flattening out all over the place. I rid a 63 or 64 cm so finding a good frame is rare for me.
Nishiki is probably like absolutely every major manufacturer ever in the history of ever:
They made some really great frames, and they made some really bottom of the barrel frames.
Gitane also falls into the category of "every major manufacturer ever in the history of ever". A crappy Gitane is gonna be crappy. A great Gitane is gonna be great.
Saying "I have a Nishiki" or "I have a Gitane" doesn't help. Model, year, and tubing are relevant factors.
