My wife is out of town, my daughter was at school, and I'm on vacation this week. This normally is a recipe for lots of bike riding, but I tweaked my neck last Sunday and had to take a little break from riding. Don't feel like cleaning house. Don't need to do any shopping. All my friends are working. What to do? Why, go to the movies, of course. Paid $12.50 for a noontime show, extra cost to cover the 3D glasses. $4.75 for a Diet Pepsi. Yes, concessions make money, good business if you can get in it. Go in the theater, one of three, count-em three, people in to see the movie. Nice.
Haven't seen a 3D movie in a theater since Jaws 3. Times have changed. The glasses no longer are red and green, for one thing. And they aren't made of paper, which is nice. Most of the previews were in 3D, so I got a little warm up. The new Tron flick looks to be a winner, but of course I loved the original. Saw that one oh, close to 30 years ago. Or whenever it came out. Not getting any younger, I guess.
I've seen all the RE movies, even read the novelizations. Played the video games years ago, which is where I learned to love the genre. Smoked a lot of dope back then, too. Sadly, my best friend, who I did all these things with, died in 1999. Drinking and drugs will do that to you. Did it to him, anyway. Back to the film...
Loved it. Started well, kept a good pace, and had a highly climactic ending. Not much in the way of new zombie creatures, but the ones that made an appearance were simply incredible. The fight scenes, with plenty of 3D and Matrix-style slow-mo, were supremely engaging. We got to see a return of several characters from the previous films (those that hadn't been killed, anyway), but no Jill Valentine. Maybe I missed it, but I don't recall her getting killed in the other films. I'll have to watch them again, I suppose.
And Milla? She gets better and better. She's best known for these fims, and The Fifth Element, and I love her in all of them. Alice doesn't mess around in this one. She manages to show her soft side, though. Not to the zombies or dogs, mind you.
Anyways...I'll give it 4 of 5 stars. It would be 5, but some of the actors are not the best. The RE films are known to cast b- and c-listers. Some are good, some not so much. Most of them end up dead, though, kinda like in any of the 26 Friday the 13th films. And they come back as zombies. So they have that going for them. So, see it now, before it leaves the theater, and you can't see it in 3D on the big screen.
