Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - these rims okay? n00b 1st post, thanks for helping!

INTRO & BACKGROUND (so if you wanna answer just the rims lol read further down)
hello all, ive been reading up in this section and joined the forum today. im new to biking in general, i jumped on some trails and built a mtb from an old frame a friend gave me. im hooked! started riding in town with some guys on the road, and my old mtb was no good for asphault, so i picked up a 2011 Dawes Revolver from 'chicabike' on ebay. I enjoy riding it SS over fixed, for now, as I'm riding distance with a group. I've already noticed a few components on the bike being pretty cheap, but am still extremely happy with the purchase as the bikes are very very smooth riding! anyways, ive already ordered a new crankset, pedals, shimano freewheel, and a quick release skewer and axle-bolt for the front (so i can put the bike on my mounts in truck bed for travel). though im not riding the bike fixed, i really dig big color schemes on all my bikes, and fixed guys always have awesome color schemes ha!

anyways, im wanting some green wheels and saw these on ebay, but wanted to see if anyone had any negative info on them...

I like the big sidewalls of the rims, not exactly sure of the name of that style. Any pros/cons to running a large sided rim like that over smaller ones? I'm looking for rims that are not neon-green, which most I find seem to be. And I'm kinda on a low budget, so that's why I'm asking for these. Really just wanting to ride and colored rims arent a necessity, but I have a strange problem with not being able to leave anything like it came or oem lol :twitchy:

They will not be an upgrade from the stock wheels. deep profile rims are a little stiffer and more "aerodynamic" (if you are going really really fast in a straight line) but the cons are that they are heavier (especially with cheaper rims) and you will be subject to getting blown around a bit by crosswinds. I have a set of velocity deep v's laced to profile racing hubs. they were a HUGE upgrade from my formula hubs and velocity aeroheads. But, i do notice getting blown around more, and they were pricey. spend as much as you can on wheels, they will be the biggest upgrade. Look for at least something like formula hubs and mavic cxp rims. welcome to biking!

I understand you like the revolver, but did you really need to replace the cranks and freewheel?

I would replace the wheels when your old ones get too old or something. If you really want them and have lots of money (i know i dont.) buy them and sell your old rims on craigslist. These have just popped up on ebay, so I dont know much about them. They are probably heavy as with all deep deep rims but it wont make a difference on a revolver.

BUY TIRES, GRIPS, PEDALS, BETTER SEAT.

Yeah the revolver is quite a heavy bike, but as it is the only and first road bike I've ever ridden I dont have to worry about being aware of the weight so much. I replaced the crankset because it just looks like very cheap metal, and I have assembled 4 of these bikes now and the one I'm using now seems to be slightly bent, possibly from shipping. Also I'm replacing the freewheel because its making some noise during heavy pedaling, a shimano one is only $20, I guess mostly for reassurance during heavy climbs and annoyance of the 'popping' noise, this bike is the only one I've had any sort of issues from out of the 4 ive assembled.

Haha, I dont have a lot of money, I'm actually pretty poor, I just have a tendency to do a visual build in my head, and kinda make that a weekly purchase until it's complete. It's an addiction, I have a thing for anything with wheels lol, I'm into cars mostly so this was a way for me to exercise and enjoy myself still.

What's the difference between the Formula hubs & the Profile-Racing hubs? I noticed the Formula hubs that came on the bike have the bearing races as part of the hub, similiar to my BMX and MTB, but a lot of the nicer rims have independent bearings like skates/skateboards, which I would think would be better/smoother? Any teachings on that you can hand me, I'd appreciate! ^_^

Profile hubs are really expensive...I think they are around ~$250 for a set, but they roll really smooth. Profile is a BMX company that makes tough as nails hubs, so I assume their track hubs are just as tough. Formula hubs are really the standard hubs for fixed gear riding, they are pretty trustworthy, couldn't go wrong with them.

Tires. BTW, if you really want the wheels get them now - they are 120 dollars on the auction.

na, the rims i have have a dust cover, then the bearings (balls) are using the hub itself as a race. but these rims I'm looking at, look like they have solid bearings like in a skateboard wheel, like the race/dust shields/balls are all one piece like so:

I would think those type of bearings would be better, as you could replace them entirely, or am I wrong and why?

I've got a set of these in red. They're fine. Over 3000 miles w/no problems. Didn't have to true them out of the box. Got tires, too. Pretty good deal for 100.00. At some point I'll upgrade, but it isn't a priority right now.

They're 140 +28 dollars of shipping now.

You seem to know your stuff pretty well, and a set of these wheels would be an upgrade from your cheap-o looseball bearing hubs.

NICE! Thanks for the welcome, so youre at Ole Miss eh? I do granite install jobs at the new condos at Fleur De Lis (sp?) every few months we get a big job from there. Sometimes do random jobs down there, but it's a drive. I'm actually in Hernando MS. Lived here 6 years and basically every 'scene' sucks in memphis, except there is a large bicycle scene I'm learning!

"looseball" bearings, thank you for a name finally! lol!looseball vs sealed, see I just woke up and have already learned something! that's why I love forums haha! thanks for the warm welcoming, I appreciate all the constructive and educational responses, I know some forums just simply flame new guys off before they even get a chance to start, I've been guilty before haha we all have at some time. I work on cars a lot, so I guess that's why it seems like I know a lot, bikes are just a lot less parts but can still be complex just like anything else I've learned when disassembling, the biggest problem with bikes is SIZING stuff, everything is in metric (better) and a lot of bike frames are copmletely different I'm learning, but otherwise once I disassemble something (and dont break it), I feel like I can always put it back together! Just learning the tricks of the trade and terminology, and building bike-mechanic experience, is all I lack now!

Also, what about these rims? They seem to have good components and sealed bearings as well, just they're the smaller sidewall type rim. The only thing I dont like on those bigger ones is they're 'lime-green' and I'm looking for a darker green color scheme, these anodized green wheels may match closer, and as someone stated above be lighter and have less crosswind problems.

edit QUESTION: why do a lot of these sets only have machined braking surface for the front wheels? I always thought the back brake was safer/better to use, like on a motorcycle, especially so you dont lock up going really fast accidentally. Thanks!

The front brake is supposed to stop you faster than the back, but you should try and keep your weight back when pullin em hard. I have had a couple close calls when not payin attention

because when riding fixed your back wheel is your back brake. Some people just add a front brake for emergencies. If you're riding single you're going to want a back brake and a machined rear wheel so you don't look like Jared Leto.

That's what I was figuring, mostly for fixed rides. I dont think I'd want to even take chances of using the front brake over the rear going down hill at like 35+mph lol! Maybe its possible to contact that website and have both machined?

Nice 240. A friend of mine when I lived in Okinawa had a Sil80 that was almost the same color.
I have a wheelset from Ebay much like those aeromax wheels. They came with tubes tires and a cog installed. Both rims are machined so you can run front and rear brakes. They are ok wheels for the price. I was looking for a pair to link to but the guy on ebay doesn't have them anymore.
