Bad day... looks like my 6 month old laptop's HD crapped out. I can live with that; Samsung said send it back, we'll replace it.

Problem is, I don't have everything backed up, so I want to try and get some of the stuff off the disk before I send it back.

I have a licensed copy of Recover Lost Data, and the key... but the installer won't take it. It keeps saying Input number in the proper format.

Anyone use this program and know the format of the serial key??

Or, if not, suggestions for good recovery utilities?

How much function can you squeeze out of the computer? Does it go through the bios but then chokes when it has to access the hd to continue booting?

It won't read the HD, so none.

Not sure if the Master Boot Record is gone or something different. There are 3 partitions on the disk (Recovery Partition, OS Partition and the rest, for data storage). It's a Win 7 partitioned disk.

The IT guy where I work keeps a hard drive enclosure (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3804512&Sku=ULT40273) around plugged into one of his machines, leaves it open so he can pop any suspect HD into it, and see how much of it he can access from the machine the enclosure is plugged into.

Does your warranty call for returning the whole computer or just the hard drive? If you're already taking the HD out, an approach like that might pay off for you.

Have to return the whole thing.

I've pulled probably 90% of my stuff off using an open source program, but there are some other files (movies, pst files) that I haven't got yet.

I'm going to ask them to send the hard drive back if they can't recover it so I can take it to a recovery person.
