Well as I posted last week on replacing my crankset because of a recall on the cranks breaking I got the new cranks. I replaced them along with the BB and a new HG chain, now if I apply good pressure to the peddles like climbing the new chain skips on the cassette. I put my old chain back on and there is not a problem.
I ordered a new HG cassette last night replacing the 15 year old IG cassette just in case it is worn more than it looks but was wondering if the HG chain is that much thicker or if the old chain is just worn enough to mesh with the old cassette and keep it from skipping?
I had tried replacing the chain before and it did the same thing but it was a cheap Walmart chain and just thought that was the problem, not the right chain.

Yes the old chain and cassette are worn together. If the new chain is designed for the number of cogs on the new cassette (6-7 speed probably) they will work properly together. I have no idea what you mean by the chain being thicker. Please try to be more careful about wording if you want helpful responses. Chains have length and width, not "thickness."

It would be width I am describing, there seems to be less clearance between each adjacant cog and the chain. I was wondering if there is a big enough difference between the 2 chains (HG and IG) to be a problem or is it that the cassette may just be to worn to mesh with a new chain causing the skip. The HG Shimano chain is made for 7, 8, and 9 speed per the box.

The cassette is worn. Carefully examine the teeth on the cogs that are slipping. You will see that the metal is distorted where the chain pulls on the teeth. http://www.sheldonbrown.com/brandt/chain-care.html

Right on man, replaced the cassette and put the new chain on, with the new crank and bb its back to riding like new! As a plus to all this I am learning a good bit and aquiring some tools for future use.
