Another Nebraska cyclist here. I ride vehicularly, and encourage others to do so, too! In my town, there are too many cyclists riding on the sidewalks, and too many people who think that I should also be on the sidewalk. I've even heard that I should be riding on the sidewalk against traffic, because that's 'safest'!! Balderdash!

I commute to work only 3 miles each way; my ride of choice currently is a 2000 Terry Flora hybrid, upon which I've placed a Terry Liberator saddle, a Blackburn MTN1+ rack, a bell, and a light. I've ordered fenders, and they should be here soon - I should mention for the good of the order that 24" wheel fenders are almost IMPOSSIBLE to find. But, Wald makes them - in middleweight and balloon sizes.

I'm looking at possibly buying an older Terry Symmetry road bike. It has friction shifters mounted on the downtube, which I find really awkward. Any tips/hints on upgrading the bike?

I've been lurking on the Commuting, Road, General, and Women's boards. Lots of good info to be found here, and I'm glad for Bike Forums!

Welcome, I am relatively new to the forums as well. Where in Nebraska do you live? I have friends in Kearney, NE which seems like a nice place to live.

I'm in Lincoln. It's so flat here, that I long to find some hills! Maybe I'll bike out to Kearney!

Welcome & enjoy the commute lifestyle. I spent part of my childhood in & around Milford. Mom, my sister & I lived there with my grandparents while my dad was in the service during WW2, had several relatives in Lincoln so have lots of memories of your hometown. I remember there were lots of Chestnut trees there which grew clear across the street & formed a shady canopy where my great grandmother lived. Don

Cycleworks is a pretty cool bike shop there. I spent a morning in there one time. I was impressed by the # of people that rode there bikes into the shop there on a week day. We don't get that sort of action around here.

Terrific place, Cycleworks. I live about 5 blocks from there, and I often ride my bike directly into the store to ask questions, buy things, etc. Chris is the owner, and a great guy. Also, if you go to Bike Pedalers at 33rd and Randolph, Tyler will sell you one sweet bike! He'll even stop playing hacky-sack while he's doing it, too.

Lincoln seems to have a lot of bike shops, all good except for one that I could name. I wonder if the number is because Lincoln's a university town? I'm originally from South Carolina, where it seemed NO ONE biked, at least around my hometown - Columbia.

Welcome, Infodiva! I live in California, but I'm originally from Kansas. I never rode a bike in Nebraska, but I once had a girlfriend in Holdrege!
