I cant imagine those rings would be too durable. It seems like they are s o big it would be tough to make one stiff enough that it wouldnt bend.

chainring almost touching the floor ftw. I'm wondering if leaning is an issue much like pedal strike but more like carve into the banks.

I've seen pictures of those bikes where they would ride behind motorcycles trying to break speed records (I assume). The motorcycle would have this aerodynamic wedge directly behind it that was big enough to block out rider behind it if you were looking at it head-on (imagine a tractor-trailer, but instead of the trailer there'd be a guy on that bike behind the cab...) and it was the riders job to get as close as possible to the backside of that airdam to keep out of the wind resistance. There'd be a bar with a rolling pin on it that was spaced a few inches from the dam so that if the bike got too close (or maybe it was when it got just at the right distance) then his front wheel would just turn the pin.
It's interesting.
edit: in the pic with the red Schwinn you can see a picture of the apparatus in the placard underneath the bike... and I was mistaken; it's not a motorcycle... it's a race-car.

that bike was made for straight fast runs, not leaning into turns.

That was a special "stayer (http://davesbikeblog.blogspot.com/2007/05/stayers.html)" bike for a motor-paced speed record attempt on a straight course.
