I just picked up a set of Open Pro's with Ultegra hubs from Performance. BF consensus is to get them re-trued. Does anyone have any recommendations for a great wheelsmith in the Orange County area? I want someone great or I might as well save the money and ride as is.

Should I ride the wheels first to stress the spokes or get them re-trued first and touched up later?

I don't know any master wheel builders in Orange County, but I'm quite sure there would be a competent one at Ted's Manhattan Cycles in Manhattan Beach if that's not too far for you.

If it were me.....I'd put about 200 miles on them first (figuring they aren't too far out right now), then have them retensioned after a short break-in period. This works geat for me!

Juan at CycleCare in Lake Forest. Best wheel builder in Orange County...best mechanic too. He's the kind of guy who will tell you if they don't need to be serviced.

I second this. I just recently had Juan build me an open pro/dura ace 7800 rear wheel and brought the front wheel that I had purchased from performance bike four years ago and had laying around. I asked him to look at the front wheel and rebuild/re-tension if necessary. He built up a great rear wheel and told me the front wheel was fine.

I've since had him overhaul two of my bikes and am going to have him build up another wheelset for me. Juan is great.

How far from true do they need to be before one seeks adjustment? I have an Aksium wheelset with about 200 miles on them, and the rear wheel looks to be slightly out of true. Just eyeballing the rim as it rolls between the brake shoes, it appears to oscillate by less than 1mm.

I would not ride them without having them properly tensioned and stress relieved first. Truing is one thing that is easy to visualize, however, proper spoke tension is what makes a wheel durable and long lasting.

In the tension and truing process the builder will stress relieve the spokes. Stress relieving spokes can not be accomplished by riding on a new wheel.
