It's time for a forum ride. It's time for pie! I'm thinking a Saturday, mid-October. Start in Escondido at the movie theatre complex (there's coffee and plenty of parking), up trough Valley Center on the grade (not Wohlford), etc, up South Grade, down East Grade, Mesa Grande, Old Julian Highway, out of Ramona on the 67 and Scrips Pkwy to return through Poway for something different or Highland Valley but not turning off onto Bandy Canyon, to return through South Escondido around Felicita. Of course there will be pie in Santa Ysabel. I'll provide route slips, not that it's really needed.

Anyone?

I'll be interested if the start time is after 8:00 AM. :D How long is that route? I know it is painfully hilly, so it better be short. :notamused:

Pie in Santa Ysabel? Why not in Julian?

Just mapped it, approximately 104 miles with 7,500 of climbing.

I'd be down, but like JimmyNH, I'd prefer it to be shorter.

Pie in Santa Ysabel? Why not in Julian? The Santa Ysabel location is better if you're doing Palomar and Mesa Grande. You'd have to go out of your way quite a bit to get to Julian. If you're going down Montezuma Grade and climbing Banner Grade, you'll be closer to the Julian store.

I'm interested if it isn't on the 10/16 weekend. We're doing the banner and Montezuma route on the 17th.

Oooh, forgot about that. Noted.

If you must have pie in Julian then we can make that left turn at Santa Ysabel, makes no difference to me.

If you want the ride to be shorter, you'll just have to go faster. You can always catch us at the casino.

So you basically confirm it is 104 miles with 7,500' of climbing (thanks DCnoJ!)? Sorry bro, the masochist in me died long ago. Let me know when you'll be organizing the Robertkat Annual Poser Ride, I might be up for that. :D
Now, the casino option (if you mean Harrah's) seems more attractive. I can meet you there and ride up South Grade and then down East Grade with you. Then I'll go back and have a beer at the casino while you suckers will be still suffering on the road. :p

If anyone wants just a little extra effort there are always side trips to the observatory.... it is only 300 more vertical feet over 4 miles, totally easy... :-)

^^ That there is. I'm riding up there tomorrow. Should be nice weather D-bag free.

I'll be up for that. Maybe show up a little before they're expected to get there so we can do a warm-up or meet a little further down, from Harrah's the climb starts within a mile and a half.

So maybe we should do this in November, closer to Thanxgivin' as has been done before. Plus it will give the weather some time to mellow out. It was 90+ on South Grade today. I felt like puking - on the way down. And the bugs, oh gawd the bugs. I was in a constant state of hibblyjibblies all the way to the Observatory. How about a forum Palomar ride early October? Harrahs to the Observatory and back. 36 miles with 5400' -ish of climbing. But then this data comes from MapMyRide, so in reality it's probably like 38 miles with 5800'. YMMV.

I'm interested in this ride. It seems to be within my range and would be best with others. Nate Harrison Grade is much more fun than South Grade though (dirt road precludes those crazies on the motorcycles).

Have no idea what my schedule is, but if I can't make it, I wouldn't mind a route slip anyway to plan some future adventure.

Assuming I'm not busy I'm down. Could I suggest starting at Pala's instead so it gives at least some time for a proper warm-up? If not I'll just try and show up earlier and try to get a warm-up.

Now you're talking? :D Early October is fine with me. 2-nd? 9-th? If I feel spunky, I can try East Grade too, although last time I tried this, I ended up in deep shít. :o Lunch at Harrah's?
