Mountain Biking - Finally got it!!

Woohoo - finally got the '05 Epic Comp...been waiting for them to ship to the LBS for weeks now. Came in yesterday.

Try to ignore the platform pedals - the shoes I ordered didn't come in at the same time so the LBS put on some "loaner" platforms so I can start tweaking on the bike a bit.

Took it for a short ride earlier - I'm very happy with it so far. This weekend I'll put it through a real test.

The lbs gave it to me for the price of the 2004 model - around $2,200 USD. The 2005 catalog has them listed for $2,600 this year.

Initially I'm not liking the tires. The knobbys are not that "knobby" - they (Specialized) seem to be trying to supply a faster tire as opposed to a "dirt" tire. I was slipping around on the stocks tires on the test ride... I'm going to swap out the stock tires with some WTB Velociraptors - better grip for the dirt I ride in. And the WTBs are 2.1s instead of the stock 2.0s.

loving the color of the frame. awesome. the only thing better than flat bars IMO would be bar ends on flat bars.

Very sweet... also loving the colour. The thing looks fast just standing still.

BTW, might I make a suggestion? Ditch those pedal reflectors before they become trail litter because you know they'll be flung off the bike five minutes into your first ride when you bash a pedal against a rock or stump or something.

Yeah i agree although the reflectors lasted about 1 and a half years on my freeride rig before i intentionally took em off. And if you want to ride on the road in the dark then keep em. But yeah, they'll probably end up as trail trash.

I find pedal reflectors pretty useless on the road anyways as they're liable to get covered up by your shoe. My shoes already have reflective strips on them. If you're riding on the roads at night, a better bet is to wear active lighting in the form of ankle bands such as the Planet Bike BRT Strap (http://www.planetbike.com/pop/3030.html).

It's 26 pounds, Brandon. :) Not too bad.

As far as the pedal reflectors... those pedals will be replaced with the Shimano clipless pedals as soon as my shoes come in. I don't use reflectors at all. ;)

It wouldn't be the first time. Don't worry though, if it does go out of fashion, it'll come around again. The same can be said of flatbars and bullmoose bars...
