I ran out of the usual solvent I use to get the old grease out of the bearings, can I use WD-40 to remove the grease?

Yes, WD-40 is more solvent than lubricant.

Gasoline will work better, its cheaper, but is a little more dangerous.

Gasoline is bad in many ways: flammable, toxic fumes, bad on skin... Much better is paint thinner; I use it to clean chains, degrease, remove tubular glue and label adhesives.

If you do decide to use gasoline let it sit out in open air for a long while then it will loose its flamability.

Yes, thanks for clarifying. I should have stated specifically that I meant 100% mineral spirits.

also, wd-40 is a penetrant and will break down grease compounds and rubber/plastics, so it's probably far worse to use than mineral spirits. i used some once and it does some nasty stuff to anything that isn't all metal.
