Cyclocross - Any reason I can't run a hybrid fork on my cross bike?

I just got a frame (2007 Felt F1x that was stripped and abandoned after the fork recall and never ridden) for nearly nothing and I want to build it up. I posted in the Trade thread for some parts, but have a question about the fork.

In looking around, I've seen some hybrid forks that appear to have what I'm looking for. Only problem I see is the ugly unicrown fork most have.

I haven't raced yet, but I plan to. And I ride a lot of fire roads and some singletrack with my other cross bike so this one will be abused.

My other (and admittedly probably better) option is to get a Surly Cross Check fork but cash is tight right now as I'm still in college so I would like to keep it under $50.

Shouldn't be a big problem. It may be a little heavy but it should work.

I doubt the Surly fork is substantially different in anyway except marketing.

I went with a Cross Check fork because I got a great deal, I think it looks nicer (lugged crown vs. unicrown), and is probably sturdier.
Now I just hope the steel fork won't look terrible on an alum. frame....

I have a Surly 1x1 on my MTB/Crosser, and it works great. I also have a Fuji hybrid fork just sitting in my garage for cheap if you're interested. PM me if you want, otherwise, the Surly is a darn good fork.

I would be more concerned about messing up the geometry if you don't pay attention to rake / trail and match the fork geometry to the bike. Now that it's purchased ... how does it feel?

The bike isn't together yet. I'm still waiting on a few parts to arrive. Also, I still need a 9 speed Shimano mtb RD, seatpost and handlebars --> off to Ebay.

looks similar; should be fine; you are young (assuming) so you must race a heavy bike and still beat the crap out of old guys; the extra weight won't make that much difference in race results; shaving weight off your bike will put the hurt on your wallet in a hurry; the engine is far more important

Still looking for a fork? I used a hybrid fork on a 'cross bike for a little while at it was fine. I've swapped it for a touring fork, so the hybrid one is for sale... $25 in the Boston area.

I bought a new Surly Cross Check fork and it should be arriving any day now...although I'm having buyer's remorse already and wishing I bought a carbon fork.
