Adaptive Cycling: Handcycles, Amputee Adaptation, Visual Impairment, and Other Needs - Any others out there

Is there any other Amputee riders out there. I live in Mich and new to rideing, any help and boy I need it.:D

I saw this video once and although Cardiel isn't an amputee, nobody ever thought he'd walk again and here he is... because of the immobility in his ankle, he rides fixed. if you have a short attention span, watch the 4th segment from about 6:00 forward, you'll get the story but you won't really know as much about John so it may or may not have as much "impact"

Someone posted here a while back about getting passed by a 1-legged cyclist.

When I was a kid, I knew an old man (70+) that had a wooden leg, he'd lost his leg near the hip in a motorscooter accident. He used an adult tricycle to get around, and had a wooden hand-lever rigged up to the pedal he couldn't use. I think that was mostly so he didn't get stuck on the half of the stroke he couldn't pedal (he used platform pedals of course) rather than getting a lot of power out of his arm. We lived near the coast where it was perfectly flat, so hills were not a problem, and his speed tended to be pretty sedate.

It would help to know what your amputation is and at what level.

A rider here in Reno that I see regularly riding with only one arm. He is a Vietnam veteran and uses a bike as his only transportation. He actually has the handlebar unused side cut off at the stem. It certainly discourages thieves! He uses both a twist shifter and a rapidfire shifter on the one side of the handlebar to handle both derailleurs and a dual cable brake lever to operate both brakes.

His amputation is above the elbow and I have never seen him wear a prosthesis.

There was a guy who used to post in the Foo subforum who was a double amputee (just below the knees). He said stopping was the hardest part.

I live near Reno, too, and I see this guy often. He's a wiry little sucker and a pretty strong rider. I've followed him a few times, and he's impressively stable and straight. Haven't talked with him except to say hello, but he doesn't have any trouble getting around.
Years ago when I lived in LA and BMX bikes were pretty new, I did a story on a 12- or 13-year-old kid who'd lost a leg but was racing on the short sprint courses those guys used to use (maybe still do; I don't know). He was a solid contender, not a winner but usually in the top third of the field. At that time the racers didn't use any kind of attachment to the pedals (maybe still don't...), but they allowed him a toe clip to get over the top on the upstroke (this was long before clipless). I kept in touch with him for awhile, but I moved to Reno and he started high school and got a car...

I was once passed on my commute home by a one-legged rider. He did a track stand to stop at an intersection. I think he had a clipless pedal. I have never seen him again.
