Hey all, this is only my second thread, but out of the four Dawes Revolvers I've purchased and assembled, the one I'm riding is giving me some issues I'm afraid will become problems in the future. I love the bike, its the best bang for the buck I could expect for, so if you're looking for a starter ss/fix don't let this thread turn you away! Anyways, looking for help from all you part-searchers, my bottom bracket has some slack in it. I changed the crankset today, and knew I had some small noise coming from that area, so I figured I'd inspect while I was able to and regrease everything. Well the bearings probably were never actually packed, and teh grease was pretty weak, so i cleaned everything and properly packed them and reassembled. Well the slack is still there, so I guess it's just the bearings/axle itself. Anyone know of where I could find replacement parts for this model bike or even a replacement of higher quality? I'm on a low budget, and I'm new to bike parts so I'm not really sure where to look or what parts/directions to measure to even begin searching. ANY help or direction is greatly appreciate, and thanks to responses in advance!

What do you mean by "slack" in your bb?

Did you remove said BB from frame? If not tighten the cups. If you did, the tightness has to be more than finger tight.

Square tapered cranks I am assuming.

it looks like ^this, and yes i removed it and repacked the bearings. i did not loosen one side, because it was all the way in, and I have tools to tighten it. I can tighten the other side until there is tension on the axle itself (its not smooth spinning), and then put the lockring on, and still grab both sides of the axle and move it up/down a little from both sides. when im riding it makes a little 'popping' noise, like a feint pedal click, under pedaling. it doesnt make the noise unless I'm pedaling, and its pretty consistent. I'm positive it shouldn't have movement like that, it has to be from the cheap bottom setup.

Do I have to run the same type of setup, as the picture above? I keep searching and finding ones that look like this:

Are those better? It looks like it would be as the end seem sealed off better to prevent dirt/etc and the centers block stuff from coming through the frame and etc.

Also looking to know what ways I measure? I'm assuming everythign is in 'mm' and length of the axle, thread pitch of cups, but what else? Do I need to mic the bearings or the inner diameter of the frame?

Did you get this problem fixed? If so, how did you do it? I just purchased a Dawes Revolver, and I think I have the same problem. Great bike, but that popping sound is kind of annoying.

Yeah I had purchased the bike from a seller on eBay and contacted them, they sent me another bb set for free! That's all it was and I just had to acquire the right tools to get the job done. Seriously though, if you're new to biking as I was at that time, GET THE RIGHT TOOLS. I have a 3-car garage with a lift and TONS of automotive tools, that stuff was useless when working on a bike :twitchy:haha!

And just fyi, it is not a cartridge style like I posted above. It's been about a year or else this would all still be fresh on my head I'd be able to give you more specifics, but I havent been cycling for some time now sadly. Work prevents me from riding and too many cheeseburgers. I'm doing a 6week workout to get in shape with hopes of being in enough shape to start cycling back up ha!

Best of luck to you!
