I regularly see people recommending books on this forum. Is there a way you could set it up so that you get a cut if someone buys a book from, say, Amazon.com, if that person has followed a link from your site?

As in, say, an affiliate link on the header like there used to be with Performance/Nashbar/Supergo?

No. More like this (http://www.nationalreview.com/redirect/amazon.asp?j=189355483X) link on this (http://www.nationalreview.com/books/nordlinger200409231424.asp) page at National Review. I assume that NR gets a cut of the money Amazon makes off the link, otherwise there'd be no reason for the link to ID the source.

You'd probably have to do it manually, which would be the downside. Putting the Amazon.com (or bn.com) link at the top might work, too. It would be logistically easier for the webmaster, but les convenient for the users.

I have thought about it, but its too much work for little a very little return.

I have a website related to scrollsaw fretwork. I get nowhere near the traffic that this site gets, but my amazon affiliation pays for my hosting and actually turns a little bit of profit beyond that.

I wish you could get the amazon.com thing going. With all the books I buy (have to, since some of my clubs pay for my education, which means I'm required to continue getting books on trends and what's new with health and fitness), it would be nice to know it wasn't going all to the big guys.

The MTBR.com forums (forums.mtbr.com) have something similar to this (products mentioned in this post). I'm pretty familiar with Vbulletin, and I could make a similar script for bikeforums if your interested (free work).
