Foo - What is wrong with people?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Just watching this makes me angry. Just a warning there is adult language. Just sayin'
That's a powerful video. Warning--it might ruin your day if you watch it!

Because if I try to help, then he beats me up and leaves my wife a widow and my kid an orphan? No reason to die because of a material object.
I am all for helping--if you have the tools and means to do so.
What would you expect people to do?

I would head straight to the poilice. Attempted theft.
Assault. And any other thing that I could think to press charges over. Every single one in that video....every one of them.

Shoulda called the police right away instead of messing around with his camera.
He should have done a citizens arrest. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9efgLHgsBmM)

carry a gun, if thats to much for you carry some mace, if thats to much for you carry a u-lock, if thats to much for you just beat the **** out of the guy instead of sitting there and trying to reason with him, if thats to much for you have fun getting treated like ****.
I think that in some neighborhoods it really pays to have one of this:

Sounds like we got a crusader. What is he trying to instigate? As stated above he should've called the police instead of playing Reality Cameraman. What's with the whiney tone? If you're gonna stand up to someone, you better step up to the plate.

I'm not an "internet tough guy," matter of fact I'm not even a tough guy in "the real world." I'm just a regular guy that has survived 40 years on the streets of North Philly, Thats all. Feel free to come visit some time. :)
Did the cameraman see the guy cutting his lock, track down a security guard, explain what was going on, pull out his camera or phone to record the event then return to the bike and confront the thief? If so, the thief needs to work a little quicker or find another line of work.
I don't see why the cameraman didn't charge the thief when his back was to him and run him into the light post. I don't want to sound like a keyboard commando but at some point you have to stand up for yourself and quit calling for your mommy or the cops.
And yes, I agree that the cameraman sounds like a whiner. The security guard should have hit him just to shut him up.

Seems like a put on to me. The guy taking the video seems way to calm to me.
Even so, this was just a incident over a bike. Can you imagine what things will be like when society breaks down? It's sad that there are plenty of animals and worse out roaming the streets.
Whats wrong with people? They're people.

My bike is my transportation. I don't have the money to replace it if it's stolen. Sometimes, it's more than just a bike.

in a situation like that, you find the nearest concrete on a stick
like one of these

and clobber the thief over the head from behind.
It's better if there's not so much concrete :innocent:

Those security guards should be fired for not doing their job. Clearly the thug was not going to hesitate beating up the cyclist in their presence. The tense situation could have escalated significantly into a physical altercation, so have the police arrive on scene would have prevented that opportunity, as well as officially solving the bike lock situation.

probably wasn't in their contract
Actually dude taking the video made it the worse.
He took the video and started he boulder rolling down the hill. He also kept goading the guy.
You have to ask yourself is the bike worth starting a fight over in unknown circumstances?
Dunno the city, don't care. Looked like the ghetto to me. Camera Guy was obviously too 'caucasian' to do anything but whine. (NOTE: it's a state of mind, not a skin color)
Since Brass-toothed Thief Boy already had the bike unlocked, you just kick him in the nads from behind, HARD AS YOU CAN, get on the bike, and pedal off. The average cyclist should be able to put some serious torque behind a kick like that.

I had my tri-racing bike and race wheels stolen from the basement of my house. Thief broke in when no one was home. I vowed that I would not have another bike stolen.
When I was riding courier, I came out to find a guy working on my lock. I kicked him in the side of the head, unlocked my bike and went on with my day. No cameras, no security guards, no "hey, what do you think you're doing?", or any other chances. Just a quick one to the noggin, and leave. A bike thief deserves no better.

While many people will whine that this is dirty pool, a street fight has no rules. I am in full agreement with your tactics.
Clang him in the stones and ride away while he's busy puking and crying.

It's a felony to attack someone by kicking. Use your hands next time, it's just a misdemeanor. If you don't know how to throw a punch properly, just palm strike 'em, just as effective.
makes more sense than shooting video

Would you please point me to the section of the CA Penal Code that says "hands=misdemeanor feet=felony"? I looked at PC242 and PC243 and I'm having trouble finding it. I am a criminal defense attorney, but apparently you've been practicing law longer than I have.

Not sure about in CA, but back in OH the law was that it was a higher offence if you attacked someone once they were already on the ground (regardless of it being a kick or a punch.)

Your right. I was speaking out of my hole on that one. But couldn't a lawyer interpret the law and say that kicking causes greater bodily harm than punching making it a more punishable offense?

I know you were ;) I was throwing down the BS card in the nicest way I could think of at that moment :)
A battery that causes great bodily harm carries a harsher punishment, whether it was with hands or feet. Subsection (d) of PC243. It does not matter whether that harm was caused with a punch, kick, headbutt, etc. In other words, probably not, at least not that I have ever heard of. Also, we're talking about a criminal battery, not a civil battery, so the lawyer would be a deputy District Attorney in this case. The filing DA is going to charge someone with whatever crime is applicable per the Penal Code and in the vast majority of simple battery cases where a defendant will plead out, the deputy DA assigned to the case is going to play it by the book and get the case resolved in the pre-trial stages of adjudication. Simply put, I don't see a DA differentiating between hands or feet.

Quite true in Cleveland.

Wow. It's been a while since a YT video created so much emotional feedback from me. I have a pretty uncontrollable temper but in a situation where getting jumped is a real possibility I would have probably taken a very cheap shot, grabbed my bike, and booked it. I have two bicycles stolen from me (when I lived back east). One the chain was cut and the other I left it unattended. I honestly don't know how I'd react if I caught someone in the middle of attempting to deprive me of my property - of which represents more than dollars. Work, sentiment, time. All of which turn "just an object" into much, much more. If you have ever been a victim of this type of crime (or not) and you cling to the mentality "it's just an object"... you are exactly the type of person that is making crime easy.
The fact that society is so complacent to crime and that penance for committing a crime is so little (or in this case, zero) makes it no surprise that people are so willing to commit crime in broad daylight with a large crowd around. It looked like at least one guy in a white collar shirt on with a (badge?) was looking in the direction of the guy cutting the lock. And the two black guys next to that guy were likely with him. Or at least aware.
When it comes to personal property and justice the mentality "it's not worth getting beat up for", "it's not worth dying for" is exactly what perpetuates this type of behavior. Seriously, it's "just a bike"?? Wow. WOW.
Having said that, in a perfect world I would have been carrying mace and a taser. I would have assaulted him with both got on my bike and rode off. It's ridiculous that nobody came to his aid when he called.
tl;dr - I am sooooo grateful that I don't live in an area infested with that type of scum.
