I effing ROCK

Now, I've been bad, and I haven't checked my blood sugar for the whole summer and until now, because I'm a lazy Type II diabetic. Go ahead, yell at me.

BUT, I started running this summer, and I've recently gotten into road cycling for the past month and go almost every day for at least 1.5 hours. I eat like a minimally indulgent person might.

I never really had to do much to get my blood sugars into normal range before-- just watch what I eat. But now that I've done this stuff, I recently got a new presciption filled for testing supplies and I just checked it.

I've eaten in the past 24 hours--

A small noodle bowl(fresh, not that bad stuff)
2 Bowls of Cereal
1 small ice cream
1 turkey sandwich
1 slice of french toast
1 sausage patty
1 banana
2 apples
1 bowl of tomato soup
1 veggie burger
1 bagel

AND I AM IN TOTALLY NONDIABETIC RANGE IN THE MIDDLE OF MY DAY

I rock
I just had to exclaim to someone :)

PS
I hate running-- I don't know why I didn't buy a bike sooner.

I took up biking this year to keep myself from becoming diabetic. I'm only 23... but my whole dad's side of the family is diabetic and I am planning to work my but off and eat clean to keep myself from continuing the trend.

Also.... Congrats. :)

Watch out for the ice cream! that is my present downfall. I think I will get some tonight, but first I must exercise.

Diabetes scares the hell outa me. My friend has had 3 toes removed and lost most of her vision.
She's a single mom, her son is her eyes.
She's is one of the strongest people I have ever met. Thinking about it makes me cry.
She would slap me for feeling sorry for her.

Everybody hates the first mile (even runners). The real test that will tell you if you are a runner or not is:

Runners start to feel slightly better after the first mile while everyone else continues to feel worse.

Good job and good luck.

There was a study done in Dayton Ohio on diabetes. They found that many diabetics can achieve nearly normal blood sugars with aerobic exercise. I have read that when muscle cells need glucose during or after exercise, they can suck it out of the bloodstream without insulin.

I have a friend who is type II and he can eat even a candy bar with no effect on his blood sugar (unlike you he does test) during the latter part of a century.

I would suggest that if you get off of your exercising routine to be really careful with your diet. Unlike us nondiabetics, your ability to maintain blood sugar levels is not good so if you do not adjust your eating for your change in activity bad things might happen.

Yay, for you, jomalley! Type II runs in my mom's family, as it does in a lot of Mexican families, so if you add that with the heart disease that runs on my dad's side, I've got a lot of incentive to keep fit. When my grandfather lost some toes he stopped working in the garden and his blood sugar got worse, he lost some more toes and almost all of his vision. Then, this man who was fit and upbeat his whole life was sick and depressed. Not to be overly dramatic, but it's a doom spiral.
