Any experienced views on how many miles I might expect to obtain from Campy Record chainrings (53 and 42 T)? The Record Steel/Ti cassette will hold 5 to 7 thousand miles, the all Ti less so. I am coming up on 14K on a set of new chainrings and with the next cassette swap, I am wondering if I should just go ahead and replace the rings as well, before they start to slip, and ruin what would be no doubt a perfect ride. (Parts never fail when you are having a not so good ride.)

I replace chainrings only when they begin to run a bit noisily or roughly. They will not fail or begin to slip abruptly; you will have ample forewarning, if you are sensitive to it. Also, they do not need to be replaced in pairs (or triplets).

With the older 5-to-8-speed systems, I get ALOT of miles out of my chainrings. 9-speed rings wear somewhat faster, and 10-speeds are even worse. The popular contemporary mountain bike microdrive system also accelerates wear considerably, with fewer teeth gripping the chain and significantly higher force along the chain.
