Bicycle Mechanics - Putting the spring back into a rear derailleur

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I took apart my rear der by removing the little c-clip on the dropout bolt. The spring popped out and now I can't get the spring back in b/c it's really difficult to both tension the spring and push the c-clip back in place. I know - it was stupid. Curiosity killed my derailleur. Does anybody have a trick to getting the spring back in?
A couple of suggestions come to mind. Probably the easiest is to find a helper to put the clip back in place as you tension the spring and hold the assembly. Another approach would be to put the derailer body in a vise or some other clamp to hold it steady while you do the reassembly yourself.
I certainly hope someone comes up with better suggestions than these.
