Bicycle Mechanics - Trouble getting tool fit for cassette

I have a 91 raleigh with a cassette I need to replace. The one on the bike is only marked hyperglide. I picked up a shimano hg50 and park #5 tool, the park tool does not fit either lockring , it barely engages on both the new and old one. Please help . thank you

Seems like the Park FR-5 should work with the Shimano HG50 cassette. My only guess is a defective tool.

Can you post a pic of the FR5 engaging into the new HG50 lockring?

I'd take the new cassette and lockring tool to the LBS where you bought it. Ask them about the tool. See if they have a lockring tool that fits. In fact, you might take the wheel with you and get them to take off the cassette.

I sent Park a note and they admitted the earlier version of the BBT-22 could not fit all bottom brackets, but the newer version would due to a different inside clearance diameter. You'd think they'd give it a different number (like BBT-22a), but they kept the same designation and considered a mid-production change. Unfortunately, they didn't send me a new one, but at least I understood why.

Are you sure you had the BBT-22 and not the BBT-2? The BBT-2 was designed to work with a square taper cartridge. When splined cartridges (ISIS and Hollowtech) were introduced they used the same 20-tooth spline pattern but since they had wider spindles the BBT-2 couldn't fit over them. In responce Park made the BBT-22 and discontinued the BBT-2.

You are correct, I had the BBT-2, but there was a change in the later version of the BBT-2 to accommodate the larger diameter spindles. There was a "running change". I actually found the email from April 2007 from Park Tool:


"The newer BBT-2 are deeper and have a bigger inside diameter, it was running change. The BBT-22 also would work."

First, are you sure you have a cassette and not a freewheel? The Shimano cassette lockring remover tool (Park FR5) and the Shimano freewheel remover (Park FR1) are not the same and are not interchangable. They are similar in appearance but don't interchange.

Note to Bezalel: Mudpie is correct that Park made a running change to the BBT-2 tool to let it clear Octalink and ISIS spindles but didn't change the model number. The only way to tell was that the blister pack on the revised BBT-2 had a yellow sticker saying it now fit larger diameter spindles.

The #5 barely engages either lockring, if I just take the HG50 ring off the cassette it barely fits.

OK, just asking to be sure. I expect either the FR5 tool was incorrectly made or the lockring on your cassette is damaged.

i have a pedros cassette lockring tool that fits tight on shimano lock rings but slides in fine on sram ones. the tool is heavily shop worn though.

I would think the tool is bad since it fits poorly on both rings, lower odds both rings are bad. Thanks

Quick question, are you expecting the lockring tool to engage like the freewheel tool? It won't engage nearly as far, but you probably guessed that based on the spline length of the tool.

If I hold just the lockring, the tool will not fit, it partially fits but looks too big by a hair or two.

I thought posting would fix it, if not I will have to take the tool back to the bike shop.
