Bicycle Mechanics - 10 speed chain & cassette w/ 7/8 speed chain rings?

Has anybody successfully used modern a modern 10 speed chain and cassette w/ a crankset that has 7/8 speed chain rings? Any issues to speak of?

I replaced a 10 sp Shimano 105 crankset with a Shimano LX trekking 9 speed crankset. It works fine.

I've used the 9-speed chainrings with 10-speed components, but I'm quite certain that 8-speed and lower have a different width.

That o was my understanding as well. I can't seem to find inexpensive 110bcd 10 speed chain rings.

then you grasp why they push towards 8>9>10>11? obsolescence
make reasonably priced parts
obsolete and make you spend 4X as much..

I have an old Specialized square-taper road triple crankset (24-38-50) from the 80's, (no pins, no ramps) and use it with new KMC brand 10-speed chain and Ultegra 10-speed cassette and it works just fine. Shimano long cage 105 RD, Dura Ace 7803 triple FD; Shimano ST-6603 brifters. All components are shifting/running just fine together...... no issues at all. Go for it!

Measure the thickness of the teeth. Normal 10 speed teeth are about .078 inch thick. Much thicker might be a problem. I've got an old 7 speed hybrid with steel chain rings that are .078 inch thick, just like modern 10 speed.

9 and 10-speed cranks are for all practical purposed interchangable. I'm using a 9-speed Ultegra crank with a 10-speed cassette and a 5.9 mm Wippermann 10-speed chain with absolutely no problems.

7 and 8-speed cranks have a slightly larger gap between the big and small (or middle if it's a triple) chainrings so a 10-speed chain may hang up between the rings if the shift is done under duress. Anticipate your shifts and there should be no problems.

You won't have a problem with a 7/8speed crank. You may have a bit of noise but that's it. I tried a 10speed chain on a 6 speed freewheel and it would slip in some of the gears, but the freewheel is 25 years old so maybe no surprise there.
