Fifty Plus (50+) - Rode my first century Sunday at The Apple Cider Century

I made it. No speed records set as I spent about 7 hours in the saddle but I finished. This was my first year back riding after about a 40 year lapse. My goal at the beginning was to work up to the 100 mile mark. My wife told me in the spring I'd never make it. In the beginning I was sweating like a pig after only about 20 minutes. I just gradually worked my way up and wasn't even sore after the 100 miler. I'm 56 years old and probably in my best shape since high school. Oh, I've also lost about 30 pounds in the process.

I didn't "return" to bicycling until I was 58 (13 years ago). So, you will have a couple of more years than I will.

I made 50 last month and will try my 1st century in 11 days.....hope I do as well...

It is good to hear that you have gotten the old body back into shape. It isn't such a bad thing to be able to say at 56 that you are in the best shape since high school. Congratulations.

Thanks everyone. I feel pretty good about reaching my goal. Next year I want to concentrate on going a little faster. Too bad winter is approaching, riding in the basement is nowhere near as fun.

Congrats SVThis! I did ACC in '08, but farted around too long last year until they filled. Then this year I couldn't make it. Maybe next year, we'll be able to meet up. I too have great hopes for next year. Not that this year was bad, mind you...
