Bicycle Mechanics - options for changing shifters on Cadex 2 CFR?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Hi, My neighbor just gave me his old Cadex 2 CFR. It's a little too big for me but much better than my old bike. I'm going to ride it until I can afford to buy a new bike and by then I'll hopefully know what I want.

In the meantime, I'd like to change the shifters to something that is not on the down tube. What are my options for this bike? How much are STI's? I googled it but there seems to be a million choices (and I'm not a mechanic!). Since this is a temporary bike I don't want to spend too much on it.

Thanks for any help!

Which model STI? And who will do the install? Since this is going to be a temporary bike, I would personally forget it, as this is an expensive undertaking. You could easily spend $200 to $300 doing it, with lower end components.

The only way to do STI cheap is to find a deal on a used bike with STI, and then either swap the parts (if you are a mechanic), or sell the Cadex to help fund it.

While I have converted non-STI bikes to STI, I got a deal on the bike, a deal on the STI, and did all of the work myself. Even then, it would have been cheaper to just buy a nice used bike with STI.
