Ok, I know there's a few of us out there with the Fantom Cross bikes, and I love mine, however I hate the kendas that came on it. I live in an area that is full of potholse and generally rougher terrain. I have been looking around and really like the look of the monstercross setups that some are running, but was curious as to what the widest tires that will fit on the fantom cross? I could do the trial and error setup, but that would be less than cost effective.

So how wide can you go?

Seems to be plenty of clearance.

I still owe the internet a review of my fantom cross pro (loving it, with a few upgrades). I have Michelin Mud2s on it. Listed as a 30mm, but its definitely more. No complaints yet. Used them on both dry and wet courses so far.

I used to have a picture but cant seem to find it and I no longer have the bike since it was stolen. I was running maxxis overdrive (38's) on it when it was stolen and that was a 2006 fantom cross.

I have a Fantom Cross UNO, and although on bikesdirect it says it fits 42 tires (WTF: wide tires fit), I noticed that it just barely fit a 38 in the rear. (about a milimeter clearance)

I can see how 42 may fit (Barely) in the front but the rear doesn't take more than 38 (4 less than what was claimed).

The vanilla fantom cross like you have doesn't have the WTF: wide tires fit feature, but it just goes to show you cannot trust what you read on the specs, measuring will be your best bet.

hey guys thanks for the replies, I'll have to get out to the garage one of these days and work out the numbers. Sadly my bike hasn't been getting much love these days.

Replace the pads...best thing I've done to mine was to replace the stock Tektro pads with Koolstop MTB Dual-Compounds...the difference is not subtle.

And do a forum search on tuning canti brakes; fit a fork mounted canti hanger.
