I'm constantly switching out tires for cross races, long road rides, and training rides on crushed limestone. For the crushed limestone rides, out of sheer laziness, I only change out the front tire to a 32mm knobby, and leave my 26mm slick tire on the back. The knobby in front gives me a little better handling on the limestone and gravel, and it seems to work pretty well. Is there any reason not to ride on mismatched tires? Does anyone else do frequent tire swaps like this? Are wheel swaps preferred?

I don't see why mismatched tires would be a bad thing unless you're noticing any problems. If you're not losing traction in the rear with the slick then there is no reason to put knobbies in the rear.

I ride a single speed cyclocross for fun on streets to fire roads and I have a 38c Specialized Crossroads tire which features an inverted tread with a continuous center line for less rolling resistance and in the rear I have a 32c more cyclocross type tire with horizontal treads to help resist skidding out while mashing on the looser stuff.

I rarely ride same tires front and back, it seems. Save up for a spare wheelset if it starts to bother you.

I used to do tire swaps every weekend. I think it's well worth $200 for spare wheels.

I would highly recommend buying a set of tubulars for racing and keeping what you have for training. If your looking for something relatively cheap go for the Mavic Reflexs with ultegra hubs or try Psimet. I would just throw a set 28 gatorskins on what you have and run them on the road and crushed limestone for training. Also, on race days obviously you could put a cx tire on them and you got yourself some pit wheels.
