Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Singlespeeders on hilly fireroads and trails. What gear ratio do you use?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

What size chainrings and freewheels (or fixed) do you use on hilly fireroads and trails?

My singlespeed cyclcross has 38T on front and 20T on rear. Stock was 16T freewheel on the rear but the upgrade has given me more of what I want; but I could still use a lower gearing.

If you ride your singlespeed on trails where everyone else is on a geared bike, what gear ratio are you getting by with?

Most of my cronies roll 29" MTB & pedal 32x20 in the Rocky Mts.

I ran about 55 gear inches (42X20) on my fixed cross bike. It didn't live long enough to actually be raced, but I had a lot of fun riding it.
