Mountain Biking - I've never been so insulted in my life.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Was sitting out in front of the lbs today, had the bike with me(remember my bike is REALLY nice.) Some dumby comes up and asks me which Walmart I got the bike from. This really insulted me, being that I was outside the lbs and in the window it says Kona Authorized Dealer. He then goes on to try to explain this, he basically called my bike cheap.     I wanted to ring the guys neck, but refrained from doing that, but managed to say that the lexus he drove is from a scrap yard.

Stupid kids. They don't know anything. ALL the kids I talk to around here say my bike is REALLY nice. Come on its a Haro. They think suspension is everything. I'm sure he was just a ******. There is a lot of kids like that around here.
Anyone who knew **** about bikes wouldn't have said Kona's come from department stores. If some kid asked me what walmart i got it from I would have said Your moms...
Yes I know awesome comeback :)

Okay, when the LBS is open the owner has a few bikes that sit out front of the store. (Locked up) But in a way that they are clearly visible. And I was there today and know for a fact one was a Kona. Plus on the inside of the shop. (A window facing the street) Are like 4 Kona's. The guy was clearly an idiot.

I know, it's really easy to see that it is a kona dealer.

Was it apparent that he was kidding?
If it wasn't, you're supposed to lift your bike with 2 fingers and smack him around with the bike until he gets the idea. "Lighter than your average walmart bike, dumbass".
Looking at the other side of the coin, is it possible the dude just doesn't know any better? I was standing outside Performance with my DeRosa, and this guy on a comfort bike asked me if my bike was made by decent bike makers. I just kind of looked at him all curious for a second, but then talking to him, he revealed this was his first bike, and he chose a comfort bike because he just wanted to tool about town. Sometimes, people who don't know squat about bikes ask some pretty sophomoric questions. You can either drive more people away from cycling and from having a good attitude about the people who bike, or you can educate them and perhaps convert a new cyclist to the bike, who will then give up their scrap yard Lexus. ;)

Nah, dude don't feel insulted.
The best way to deal with idiots.. ignore them!

He would not have gone into detail though if he didn't know better. The lbs owner explained he has done this before with other people, the guy views all bikes as toys. I was the first to return it to him, maybe he will remain quiet now because he had a taste of his own medicine.

my first clue that he was cluless for whatever reason was when he called it crap. many walmart bikes try to mimick good bikes with stickers that say Shimano equiped,21 speed, etc. so he might have been basing it on the lack of RST(omni, etc.) suspension, but the fact that you kept in under control shows you are worthy of a Kona and that you are not FRED

Maybe a roadie, a few really sneer @ offroad bikes, or if like Koffee said, possibly a convert, get him a road bike! We don't want idiots on the singletrack please!
My last accident was from a fool fixing his ride ON the trail, ON a downhill corner section, right after a bend around a big boulder. I came around the the first bluff and there he is...Left I hit a 10 foot tall rock, middle him, right was a ravine. I went right, right over the edge.
So I guess I'm supposed to race downhill @ 30+mph ringing a stupid bell for the stupid folks.
He did help get me outta there though. Guess he felt a little responsible.

I haven't seen roadies sneering at offroad bikes, but I've seen some snobs who ride other types of bikes. Maybe he had a better offroad bike? Or maybe he just was clueless. Or maybe he just doesn't like bikes.
It's pointless to speculate. We don't know the guy, and it would be ridiculous to label him as riding one bike or the other- it makes us look just as bad as him, in my opinion.

If I know who it is i'll put him to the test. Everyone that I have confront in town (me and Kona are from the same town) Has said they liked my bike.

Yeah, only people that dont know what theyre talking about like Jeff's bike....including Jeff :D
The guy could have been joking around. I went to Nashua, and was sitting outside of a Citgo with a few friends drinking slurpees, and a guy walked by and said "Whered you get those! K-Mart?" When he turned around, he had a bikeshop t'shirt on, and turned out he had owned one....and delt with Santa Cruz. Kinda funny.
Im with Koffee though, no point in speculating about the guy, makes us just as bad. You shoulda thrown a nickle on the ground in front of him and said "O what, your not gunna dive for it?" Or something along those lines :D

Anybody with a Horst linkage would HATE my bike. Antithesis of modern bike design.
I find dirt riders WAY more friendly than roadies, I like to think I'm pretty cool to all.
I just hate skinny tires, not the riders of the tires.

Not my fault Darren adjusted it wrong so that it couldnt handle a sprocket/bashguard grind. I swear, I dont trust that guy for anything.....he still owes me $60 for that damn BB he stripped out.

You could have explaind to him why buying a much less expensive bike from walmart is just as good as ANY bike he could afford at a bike shop. Also, explain to him how much you like his glorified Toyota Camery. ;)

Good luck getting the money back. I'm going to have it rotate it upwards more so it doesn't hit rocks on the DH. Because when the suspension compresses it is open to get damaged.

No really though, what Walmart did it come from..?
someone had to do it.
Heh... just like the road bike world... where you get made fun of because you're riding a CF bike and not a titanium one. :fight:

Umm, sometimes if i'm on the road and I have a roadie coming for a pass I B-hop onto the sidewalk and as he passes> do a launch back onto the road and suck his wheel for a block.
Being cool means doing your own thing and not being a hothead.
Having style and riding skills is paramount to bike 'bling'.
Oh, ya..IMO>
