Fifty Plus (50+) - Why was the AARP thread closed?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Just wondering. Did the OP request it (too much of that lately, IMO) or did someone ahem whine about it because it wandered away from the prevailing 50+ ethos?
I was looking for honest replies and opinions about an alternative to AARP. It got too political so I closed it. I didn't want it moved to P&R.
You started a clearly political thread (yes, I read it) and didn't want it moved to P&R? A mod should know better.

OK. As I was saying, just wondering. I'll drop it.
In fairness to the OP, he was much more likely to get a response about AARP on this forum than he might have gotten on, say, the fixie forum.
Now, before everyone starts whining about Glenn Beck, please close this thread down.

I have a tip for very old drivers - 21st.com Whenever a "very seasoned" driver calls my office for a quote we refer them there. My Mom is 91 and I just had her get a quote off their website as her State Farm premium almost doubled - it was less than half the price. 80s or 90s, sometimes 70s age range It is the old AIG program for older drivers. It's all done online and really easy.

There was a whiff of the odor of politics in the first post.

Once I clicked on the link, and saw "that person's" picture staring at me, I knew everything was headed downhill.

This reminds me of my favorite phrase coined by one of the Hitchens brothers. Guess which one:
This has the stench of totalitarian slander, paving the road to suppression and persecution.

You provided a link to a radical right organization, were then called on it, and took your toys home. Take your politics somewhere else and, while you are at it, work on the difference between lame excuse and apology.

I certainly would be more interested in a discussion of AARP here (where we have some experience with them) than in P&R, where there will be reactions that are all over the map. The discussion will get sidetracked no matter what, but the sidetracks here will not tick me off nearly as bad.
I missed the original thread, however.

Hmm, I suggested in another recent thread that someone who just turned fifty join AARP and had no idea AARP was so controversial ... and I still don't on account of the AARP thread disappeared. Is AARP related to bicycling? ... well http://aarp.duvine.com/?intcmp=ASI-RR-FIT-DUV yes. BTW DuVine looks like they have some very nice tours.

AARP was not the controversial part of the discussion. The thread is still there, it is just closed. You can read it but not post to it.
Look at AMAC as an alternative to AARP. AMAC is a far better organization. www.amac.us

The very first headline on their page is political (very political). That's not what I would be looking for either there or at AARP. I'm more interested in being 64 and finding an organization to represent me without the politics.

Thanks, I read the thread. My only observation is that if I quit every organization where I disagree with some of their stands I wouldn't belong to any. My local AARP has been very good about advocating for pedestrian issues and this very often helps cyclists as well. They were right on top of it when I asked for their support when a bill allowing bicycles with electric motors to be classed as bicycles was amended to remove three wheeled bicycles from the bill. They understood right away that this would have a negative effect on seniors and got it fixed, so I'm not about to turn in my card anytime soon, even if I don't always agree with them on some of the national issues.

One of the joys of the thread that was closed was that it gave the Weak Link a chance to refer to Seattle's mayor as a nut case (I can't recall the exact phrase).
Our mayor -- Mike McGinn, former head of the Sierra Club, and a long-time bike commuter -- is known locally as "Mayor McSchwinn."
As a service to The Weak Leak, I thought I would provide a link to an article in the local business paper in which Mayor McSchwinn has been lambasted by the most powerful landowner/developer in the area, Kemper Freeman, who owns a billion dollars or so of real estate and malls in the East Side. McSchwinn is a huge advocate of bikes and mass transit; Kemper Freeman is a huge advocate of, well, malls and cars (he's financing a number of legal actions intended to stop the spread of light rail into "his" suburb.)
Here's the interview:

From Little Britain, "When people in Britain want to buy a pet, they go to a pet shop. If they want to buy a pet shop, they go to a pet shop shop. If they want to buy a pet shop shop, well, they're just being silly. "
I think this thread is silly enough.

There have been at least a couple of efforts by graduate students using GIS mapping data to try to figure out whether Seattle can ever be as bike-friendly as Portland.
The short answer (as I understand it) is "no." The problems is that there are too many natural barriers (mainly steep hills) running across too many important neighborhoods. Therefore, even if bike infrastructure is improved, it's still going to be difficult to get casual riders interested in bike commuting because too many routes are too difficult.

So: we are not Portland. We are tougher.

Not, so in my experience. I've often been embarrassed by the language and tactics of ideological compatriots and can admire those with opposing ideas.

My wife and I didn't think much of Seattle when we were there last May. Didn't look bike friendly to us.
