Wait, doesn't the reach need to remain the same? Don't you need like... "wide reach" calipers? Or am I missing something here?

Correct. Reach is the distance from the mounting hole to the braking surface of the rim. If the current calipers fit, then longer reach calipers will put your brake pads below the rim.
