me and dad were out riding the other day when we came up on a ditch about 2 feet deep. the angle on both sides was around 45-50 degrees. we started off trying to let our front wheel touch the bottom, then stop the bike for as long as possible, before riding back out. well, that went well, UNTIL, we decided to stop in the ditch, pull out around halfway, then roll back into the ditch. i'm sure you all know, it's kinda hard to roll backwards on a mountain bike. i lost my balance, and slammed on the REAR brakes, BIG MISTAKE. before i knew, i was in a wheelie and only falling back more. we use clipless pedals, so i couldn't just put my feet down. i began to fall to the right, while still clipped in, and SLAMMED (yes, slammed as in really hard hit) into the ground. it hurt like crazy, and still hurts when i move my shoulder into certain places, or put lots of stress on it.

and hey, why go to the doctor??? they'll just say your shoulder's broke, give you a sling (which i already have a collection of 3-4) take your money, and send ya packin'. i think it's just sprained though, and i have fallen on it twice since then, which only made it hurt more.

You're not sure what's wrong with your shoulder, yet you don't think it's a good idea to go see a doctor?

As a sufferer of many a broken collarbone and fractured this or that, I gotta say its extremely stupid to not go see a doctor. You don't know whats going on inside there, and injuries left untreated often seem to result in chronic pain down the road.

i must have dislocated it and popped it back in place during a different falll without knowing it. cuz the pain isn't there usless i swing really hard (as in homerun swing type of hard)

i've had a broken collarbone before, but not from cycling, and i agree, they are not fun

Well, if its a broken bone and doesn't heal correctly, you sure are asking for problems down the road! We have a walk in clinic in our small town that, for an X-ray and treatment the cost would be very reasonable. Most clinics will charge you LESS if you have no insurance and pay by check for services rendered.

Possible rotator damage there. This will definately affect you later in life. GO SEE A DOCTOR (orthopod)! Read my post in this forum "more multiuse trail dangers" and find out what happened to me.

Your injury indeed sounds like a "shoulder separation," (been there, done that!) which will heal on its own, given several days' rest. However, as others have noted, why not ask a competent sports orthopedist to check it out, to make sure you have not done some more serious damage?

I have done the clavicle fracture thing, as well. Fortunately, neither injury has left me with any significant long-term disability or discomfort.
