Hello, I am planning to enter some races this fall. I just bought a new road bike this summer, so I cant purchase a cyclocross bike, yet. I have an old late 80s specialized mountain bike i was going to outfit for this. It only needs a new bottom bracket and crankset. plus i was going to get drop bars and the appropriate tires.
My question is- can i install a single speed crankset? its a very old bike and i don't know if the chains have changed. Plus is this a dumb idea? i have heard that some people remove the front derailer, and i rarely switch the front gears when road riding.
Thank You
