Introductions - Newbie fells like a kindergardener in a PHD class here!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Okay, Let's try that title again:"Newbie feels like a kindergartener in a PHD class here!" :)

I am NOT a bike afficionado. I stopped riding years ago when I gained weight. The past few years, hubby and I dragged out the old ten-speeds from the late 70s, early 80s, and took them to the park and state forests when we went camping. I am presently losing weight, and still don't like my old bike, and hate those freaking seats and having to lean so far forward. Last year I even tried riding it with the handlbars turned around. Several bypassers found it necessary to inform my my handlbars were backward, but I knew that. :) I want to sit up when I ride, like I did on my old 26-inch fendered Schwin when I was a kid.

We have recently decided to turn them in for all terrain bikes, so I started a thread on that in the "over 50-plus" room.

I know NOTHING about what you guys are talking here, special tires, disc brakes, anything technical, but several kind souls have helped me out with my thread on the all-terrain bikes.

So, hi, everyone. and thanks, I'm am here.

Hi! Welcome to Bike Forums. :)

If you feel you have to lean too far forwards, you might have the wrong size frame.

Well, we're getting new bikes. The one I have is a ten speed from the early 80s. All ten speeds require you to lean forward. I want to sit up straight.

If you want inspiration, check this out (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?685064-Same-Ride-1-year-later).

As for not wanting to bend over, I know what you mean. I have 5 bikes, 2 with upright bars, two with straight bars (like on a mountain bike) and only one with drop bars. Go with what feels good.

Thanks, Mango, yes I'm born and bred northeast Philly. Where abouts you from?

BTW, on Saturday, we went to our LBS and checked out some bikes, went back Monday and ordered two 27-speed Trek hybrids, on the salesman's recommendations when we told him our riding habits and needs. Found out bikes are a lot different than they were 30 years ago!
