Southeast - Anyone interested in doing the Suncoast Trail - 83 miles?
Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Planning to get a group to do the Suncoast Trail on Sunday, Oct. 10th. Meetup at SR 54/Suncoast trailhead @ 6:30am, roll at 6:45. We have 8 already and the group will possibly double. We might split into 2 speed groups if it gets too large. Won't be a hammerfest - probably a rolling avg of ~20 mph.
If interested or have questions, let me know.

Never mind, I'm an idiot, I found the thread. I'd like to hit this but I just don't know if I'm ready yet for that far of a ride. I think I am, but I haven't tested myself and I don't want to go and hold anyone back, or end up getting dropped and have to sit on my bike riding solo for five and a half hours of boredom.
10-04-10, 09:12 PM
I could be down for this I've heard the suncoast is a nice ride
10-05-10, 05:43 AM
The start time will be @ 7:00 am - sunrise is 7:27. Parking at trailhead SR54/Suncoast.
The south end of the trail is mostly flat, but the north end, north of SR 50 has some nice rolling hills, nothing too challenging. The Suncoast is a great trail with very few cross streets to slow you down. I think you will enjoy this ride.
If you are able to maintain 18 solo, you should be fine to hang with this group in the paceline. If you're not feeling strong, you will likely be able to hang on without doing any pulls if you're feeling challenged. There will be some stronger riders and a possibility of breaking into 2 speed groups depending on interest. You likely won't get dropped, but even if you do, there is no chance of getting lost since its just an up and back. This would not be a good ride if you have little or no experience in riding in a paceline.
Let me know if your interested or have any questions.

I have a little experience in a paceline, as in like a total of 15 miles. I think I'll hold off. I can keep 18mph decently, but doing it for 80 miles even in a paceline is something that I think I'm going to hold off on until I have done a solo century just to give myself a baseline.

I'm in for SUNDAY +1 so far, but I'm trying to get more involved.
Carl if you decide to go you can ride up with us.
10-05-10, 07:04 PM
I want to, but 80 miles is a bit over 2x the longest I've ridden. I think I can do it, but I don't want to do it until I KNOW I can do it...
10-05-10, 07:15 PM
nothing to it but to do it come on!
10-06-10, 06:40 PM
is this with Grupetto on Sunday?I ride with alot of Grupettons and heard they were looking at doing total trail on Sunday...
10-06-10, 07:03 PM
Yes, this is a Grupetto ride. We have about 14 currently planning to come, not including anyone from this thread. I'd suspect we might be up to over 20 by Sunday. If so, we might consider breaking into 2 speed groups.
We plan to meetup @ 6:45 and roll out no later than 7am on Sunday. If the parking at Suncoast/54 is full you can park across the street in the Target lot and ride over to the picnic table area.
Any other takers besides Avanti73 (+1) Psychlist?

With the wind today I could barely average 16.5mph on a short 30 mile ride including the beach bridges. I really don't think I'm ready for it. I'll be there in a couple of months for sure.
10-08-10, 06:54 AM
no-I'm doing the 61 miler w/ Chain Gang...wanna try the route and the variety of terrain...will add the trail at end to get miles up if wind isn't bad...

did 45 miles this morning with Ride & Roll, can't wait for the suncoast in the morning
10-09-10, 07:32 PM
Expect about 15 total. See you in the am. We roll at 7.
10-10-10, 08:41 PM
how was the ride? sorry I missed it. my friend was too sick to ride so I spent the day with my wife and dogs.
10-11-10, 05:32 AM
We ended up with a group of 11 since a few others cancelled as well. We hit some major fog, but was only an issue at some of the cross streets. Riding on the road in these areas would have been a problem.
You certainly could have come alone. While looking for you in the parking area, another rider decided to join in for a while and stayed with us for the complete ride. We all stayed together for most of the ride, but the last 12 miles, some began to fall off and took an easier pace. We averaged 19 mph and finished at about 5 hr total including breaks.
If you want to try a different ride, we ride out of the same lot on Wed, Thurs evenings @ 6pm. This will probably be shifted to 5:45 the following week.
will you guys be doing this sunday morning ride again soon. I am avanti's buddy that was supposed to go with him. I am still trying to get over a sinus infection, but I would certainly like to do this ride sometime.
10-12-10, 06:48 AM
Maybe in another 2-3 weeks. Not sure if it will be on a Sat or Sun, but will post it when we decide. Hope you feel better soon.

Next full Suncoast Trail ride is scheduled for Sunday, Nov 7th. Starting time and location is the same as before. Remember that DST ends on Nov 7th, so an extra hour of light in the morning. If there are any changes I'll give an update. Let me know if interested.
10-20-10, 07:11 PM
We are up to about 10 riders and as we get closer there should be more. We will likely have 2 speed groups.
Avanti and I may be able to make it. I am finally getting fit next week on my bike, so we shall see how things go from there.
10-23-10, 05:47 PM
I will try to make the 7 Nov ride. That will be my last big ride before crossing the state on the 14th.
Best to all

obrien and I stopped off at publix for a snack
you guys are strong riders thanks for the invite we'll do it again soon, I need to step up my game before the Horrible Hundred
11-07-10, 06:37 PM
Always fun to share the ride. Good idea to stop to refuel at publix. We were hoping you weren't having any mechanical issues.
It was good to have a nice size group to share the pulls into the headwind. The ride back south was fun, but the crosswinds were a little squirrely.
I'd love to do the Horrible Hundred, but already committed to doing a century (RWL) the day before. I don't think 2 centuries in 2 days is a smart move for me.
Very nice to meet you guys. Maybe run into you at a St. Pete club ride sometime.
It was a fun ride for sure. To bad I lost my GPS, but thats ok. Publix came up at the right time for sure. Next time I will bring a bit more food. My legs were pretty much done at that point anyway. Hopefully next time I can hang on with you guys the entire ride.
11-08-10, 01:59 PM
Sorry I couldn't make it. Family issues.
I will try to make it next time.
Thanks and best to all
