I got my IRO Mark V about a month ago and have loved riding it every day. It's certainly not the most sought-after bike, but it's a great ride and is flashy in its own right. I got the NY Fahgettaboudit u-lock but rarely do I leave it locked for an extended period of time (I'm a neurotic paranoid type). Today, since I was running late to work, I decided to bike because there's an atrium for employees where we can lock our bikes up (you need a key and obviously a bike to get in).

I set aside my own anxieties, thinking it'd be fine in a secure place for employees and for the most part it was. Except when I clocked out and went to unlock my bike I noticed a staple deep in the middle of the back tire.

Why would anyone do that?

The atrium bike area is used by employees at two different (but structurally connected) libraries. I'm banking it was an employee from the other library because younger kids work there and I wouldn't expect anyone from my library (older, presumably more mature--but I may be wrong here) to do something like that.

Ah, should I expect this? Has this happened to anybody else?

Sure, it's only a tube, but why be a dick to me if I haven't been a dick to you.

maybe you ran over the staple right before you locked it up, maybe you have an unknown enemy...there are a myriad of possibilities. sux though...sorry guy.

Eh dude it sucks, don't stress too much. In the immortal words from the interwebs: "haters gonna hate".

What do you expect us to say? (Not trying to sound mean at all)
Sounds like the atrium is a great/safe place to put your bike, there's always gonna be stupid people that will ruin your day.
Just throw a patch on, forget about it, and go ride!
If it continues I would find a new spot or contact authorities of the atrium if they exist

Oh, I know. I wasn't expecting sympathy. Like I said it's only a tube. I'm more annoyed at the fact that this happened my first time locking it up in there.

such is life, eh?

Reminds me of this time back in high school. Walked out to my bike and found my rear wheel taco'ed beyond repair. It sucked, I know how you feel.

I have no idea who did it, but it bugs me to this day.

1) Maybe you rode over a staple. Simple as that (Occam's razor and all)

2) Sometimes people do random acts of dirt. I knew guys like that.

Considering that 1 of 4 flats I have are from staples (why I don't know) I'd say your anger directed at your fellow human is misguided. Be mad at the human that allowed a staple to be free in the wild, finding its way to your path.

You riding brakeless?

honestly i think its more likely you ran over a staple during your ride there, didn't notice because it was a slow leak, got out of work, and noticed the flat and staple.

even if it wasn't, which i would say chances are small, its best to just think you ran over a staple.

why get agro/butthurt about it? i mean what are you going to do, hide in a nearby bush with a hammer laying in wait for the masked tire stapler? or maybe just let it ruin your day/week? F that. People that do **** like that are sad little people and probably have a truckload of karma about to knock them upside the head. energy attracts the like, positive or negative.

i mean, if it happens again, then it might be cause for concern. but also check your route to and from work and keep an eye out for a dropped box of staples littering the ground or something.

As others have suggested, you most likely ran over the staple. Flats sucks but if you're going to take every time you get one this personally, perhaps a bicycle is not for you.

If you ask me, its kinda hard to stick a staple In a tires. Sounds like you rode over it.

Yeah, man. They're out to get us. People break into my house when I'm gone, and move things around so I can't find them when I return. Or they come in at night and put nails in my tires, cuz how else can you explain a tire going flat overnight.

Came out of the grocery store a year or so ago to find someone had gashed the sidewall of my tire with a large knife or screwdriver or something. Stomped around mad at the humans for a while, and had to get over it. The sense of violation is more profoundly upsetting than it should be. But it is. Oh well.

p.s., maybe someone was envious of my 1990 Rockhopper all frankenbiked up as a errand runner.

Your elaborate story and deliberations notwithstanding, it sounds like you ran over a staple.
Patch, ride, enjoy.

Malicious & intentional ? I'm certain you can come up and get away with something equally mean spirited in a practical joke kind of way ? If that's the way you roll ? Don't put yourself out to much, but play the practical joke game with someone that has it in for you. They won't stop it. If you catch a co-worker doing it, take a photo with your cell phone and deal with HR. They may actually just fire the person ? Nobody helps you out by doing the right thing, practical jokes are fair play then.

Yup. It's kind of like having something stolen. The worst thing that they take from you is your peace of mind. You can replace an inner tube or a tire or even a whole bike but you'll never get back your care-free spirit.
