That is extremely cool. I bet it's even stiffer for having the longer piece fitting over the steerer- though it seems like it would be more resistant to flexing the requisite amount to go from sliding over the steerer, to clamping on.

Perhaps, but the Vanilla stem adds the impracticality of a non-removable faceplate quill stem to a threadless application. No thanks.

...........and i dunno if velo orange ever did anything original....i think they "borrow" other peoples ideas (nitto, brooks, gilles berthoud etc..) and made them a little more affordable.

Which is perfectly fine with this guy, especially seeing that all the VO stuff I've seen is of such good quality.

i actually thought they had one of the best looking bikes at interbike this year....one of the few things that impressed me enough to take a picture.

Those stems have just about nothing going for them except aesthetics. They only make sense in a custom application, or if the height/length/rise all just happen to be perfect for you (good luck). A ridiculous accoutrement on a stock bike.

Yes and no. But let's run through the list of absurdities anyways:

1) Many people will need to swap out stems for fit, and this one is integrated into the "look" of the bike, encouraging newbies to leave it be even if it doesn't fit right.
2) It actually decreases functionality, rather than simply costing more for better aesthetics like many bike parts.
3) The decreased functionality means that even more people will need to replace it for optimum fit, but even fewer will. See #1. Fun, huh?
4) When shops do swap it out for people, they'll probably never be able to get rid of it on another bike because of the reduced range of fit and the color. But then, it might be just perfect for someone looking for that "custom" look for their tarck bike.
