I recently purchased a brand New CO-MO. I have gossomer cranks. My lBS gave me some crank arm shorteners to adapt to my wee stoker who is just barely too small for no shorteners. Problem is my crank arms are terribly wide..so wide that the shorteners don't fit. Is there a solution to this or should I just "block-up" some flat pedals with a piece of 2x4!? Does anyone make big wide shorteners for those big wide gossomer crank arms?

Check with Mel at TandemsEast. He offers a different design that also comes in an extra wide model. You can see a photo of the standard model at the bottom of this Web page: http://www.tandemseast.com/stoker.html

Phone: (856) 451-5104
Email: TandemWiz@aol.com

Gear-to-Go Tandems also carries a standard and wider-than-average crank-arm shortener in a slightly different design: http://www.gtgtandems.com/parts/child.html

Precision Tandems in Kansas City also carries the same Dimension models of crank shortener sold by Gear-to-Go and would most likely price match.

Unfortuantely It appears that 43 mm is the widest I can find. It looks like I need one that is 50mm wide at the least. Those Crank arms are really really wide.

Of course, you could also buy a low-end set of rear tandem cranks from someone like Rich Shapiro at Gear-to-Go Tandems as individual items that would work with your el-freebo shorteners. If your little one will be a full-time stoker you could attach your existing chainrings to the cranks or you might even be able to work with Rich to cobble together a complete rear crankset with chainrings:

Dimension Tandem Left 110mm or 130mm BCD x 165mm @ $ 14.00
Dimension Tandem Right Rear 74/110mm or 130mm BCD x 165mm @ $ 27.00

110/74 Sugino 74/110 28-38-48 @ $ 46.00
Santana 24-38-48 9 speed @ $ 79.00

A list of the individual crank parts that Rich lists on his Web site with prices are here:

Chainring sets are here:

Mark, what's the name of that guy who makes the ICS tandems? Name escapes me at the moment. Doesn't he make crankarms drilled with three pedal holes 20mm apart? 130-150-170? Druther do that than anything that makes crankarms wider for any size of person. Rather have holes 10mm apart, but anything is better than nothing.

Eurastus

That would be da Vinci Tandems for the ICS. Yes, indeed he does have a very nifty set of cranks with three pedal holes, however they are not cheap--See here (http://www.davincitandems.com/comp.html#cranks) . On the other hand, he also offers a nice set of Shimano XT cranks, shortened and drilled twice for pedals, with ring for much less. I will be ordering a pair of the latter to install this winter for next years season. See here. (http://www.davincitandems.com/comp.html#xt)

Nevermind...MY lbs has a freind who actually lives in town by the name of borthwick. I think he used to make tandems. He actually invented the crank arm shorteners that I have. He is going to make me some "wider" ones. However I find it funny that there hasn't been forsight to make wider adapters to the FSA cranks. THe cranks I have are tandem cranks aren't they? Isn't tandeming supposed to be sort of a family type of thing or is it for people without kids?

Todd Shusterman... and yes, his company -- daVinci Designs -- offers two different sets of kiddie cranks and both were mentioned by Eurastas. However, take note that these are "Kiddie Cranks" which are mounted to a movable bottom bracket that is mounted on the stoker's seat tube above the normal crank and they do not replace the rear cross-over crankset.

Eurastus

I do believe that Todd does offer his three-hole cranks as either a traditional, cross-over tandem crankset, as a single-chainring left-side (for his own da Vinci tandems) as in the top picture, or as a traditional single-bike crankset as in the bottom image. But they range from $220 to $260 wthout rings...

Some of the crank arms shorteners were developed way back when (like 20 years ago) and pre-date most of the newer players in the crank biz like FSA as well as some the new designs.

I believe the shorteners that Mel at TandemsEast is offering will work on the Gossamer cranks; however, you'd need to drop him a note to confirm. Photo here: http://www.tandemseast.com/pictures/crankshortner.jpg

I have a set of crank shorteners that fit wth my cranks. The cranks are the FSA cranks that came standard with the Co-Motion Primera. I don't remember the particular crank model nor the arm width but could measure that data tonight when I'm closer to the tandem.

The shorteners were bought at MBS Tandems (http://mbstandems.com) in Mississauga, Ontario, but originally come from TandemsEast. There was even a TandemsEast label on the package.

If you live near Borthwick, consider your problem solved!
He built some very nice custom tandems and was a stickler for details!
Tell him Rudy and Kay say 'hi!'
