My co worker gave me a fixed blade knife (my first one) from when he bought a set of 10 for $70 to give away to people as Christmas gifts. He saw I liked knives and passed his on to me.

Well I was cleaning it and oiling it and when I went to put it away, the tip got caught on the sheath and it fell out. As it started to fall (I'm sitting in my desk chair) it was falling handle down toward my bare leg (I'm in shorts) and to avoid getting it landing on my leg, I attempted put my hand on the arm rest of the chair to brace myself to get my thigh out of the way.

Well the handle landed on my thigh, and the side of the blade landed on the arm rest.

As you can imagine, the tip was pointing straight up and as I went to push myself using the arm rest....

So this is the first time that I stabbed myself.

I've got a nice one inch gash in the meaty part of my palm between the wrist and the pinky. Not sure how deep but that sucker was bleeding good. I'm hoping I don't need stitches. I washed, put hydrogen peroxide, two butterfly bandages and two regular band aids.

The only thing that gets me mad is that it wasn't a Benchmade. Well, THAT and the fact that I woke up today with blood all over the bed.

I have no idea how I'm supposed to function today at work with water.

When I graduated from OCS 20 years ago, my then girlfriend gave me a K-Bar as a gift. The newly minted hotter-n-s*#t 2nd Lt then proceeded to push the knife through the sheath into the meaty part of my hand.. I still have that scar and a few others from the approx 200 knives I own. If you like knives, eventually you are going to cut yourself. Usually right after thinking to yourself "this doesnt seem like a good idea." :) I stabbed myself in the ass once too, still have that scar as well,,, that was a pergo cutting fiasco, that was truly "not a good idea."

wear rubber gloves on your hand for the water and this (http://www.neptunic.com/sharksuits_custom.htm) on the rest of your body just because the past indicates that you should.

Crazy Glue can be a great friend to people like you and me. =0) BTW, remember that cool little black handled ax I posted a while ago? Well I was lookiing for my headset and remembered that I had used it in bed the night before, so I run my hand down between the mattress and the frame forgetting that my super sharp ax was still there! sure 'nough i split the tip of the finger next to the pinky wide open! The ax blade went right through the nail and out the other side! I was beeding like a stuck pig! So I hold it shut and go to the bathroom where all the first aid stuff is, clean it up real good with peroxide and seal it with Crazy Glue. I bandaged it up really good and changed them every day, finger was healed up by the end of the week. ;0) Do the same and while at work use rubber gloves. =0)

I was working construction some years back and was breaking down boxes first thing in the morning. I was too busy thinking about wishing I had a cup of coffee, and I slicedf the tip of my thumb in two, really, really, really deep. That woke me up. The funny thing was, this Russian dude came in to the bathroom while I was trying to wash it and stop the bleeding and he turned white and almost passed out from the sight of it. I wrapped the thumb up in electrical tape and finished the day out. My thumb still looks weird.

I learned a long time ago (the hard way) that if something sharp is falling, let it fall, don't try to catch it or stop it.

Chuck Norris' beard retracts into his chin in fear and self protection if it senses both Siu and a knife within slashing distance at the same time. Siu does not have to be holding the knife.

I was oiling the edge of a sword that I had just finished sharpening. The edge went right through the rag and sliced into the base of my pointer finger. 10 stitches.

I've collected edged implements forever and cut and stabbed myself numerous times. Comes with the territory of owning highly-sharpened pieces of steel.

Yeah, do we really need or even want to know why you had your "headest" and your "cool little ax" in bed with you?
BTW, since this is a bike forum, I am assuming you are talking Tange or Shimano or the like and not Bose or Koss headset. ;-)

At least that would be a change from this boring old "blah blah blah I play with knives. Why do I keep stabbing myself?" stuff we usually get. ;)

Super glue and crazy glue work wonders, as do gloves. I've cut myself several times, although not generally with knives. Both times I remember cutting myself open with knives involved me peeling apples and my brother suddenly deciding that running through the kitchen instead of continuing to peel apples was a good idea. Once with an electric hedge trimmer (fixed with super glue) back in high school. In college I made a mistake with a flap disk on an angle grinder and put a flap through the center of my finger nail, and another one through the tip of my finger. That one took super glue, some steri-strips, and a bunch of other stuff. I must have patched it right because the campus doc the next morning asked me which hospital I had gone to.

Jsharr, I wear gloves for work but sometimes I have to reach into water up to my elbows so the gloves won't help.

Monogodo, I was trying to AVOID the knife but the handle landed on my leg - the blade landed point up - leaning against the arm rest, which I slammed my hand on to leverage myself out of the way...I learned to let the knives fall from my OTHER other cut, a few cuts back.

ILB, you are lucky you still have a finger.

I wrapped it really good this morning but it still got wet. So I rewrapped it on my break and did a better job. When I got home I took the bandages off and on one side of the wound it's all purple down to my wrist.

I'm just tired of getting cut. Seriously.

Siu, you did give him a penny in return, right?

Dangit, no. I forgot about that. Oh crap. He gave it to me as he was leaving and he rushed out.

I told him this morning about this incident and he laughed. So I laughed. Then He laughed even more. Then I just stopped and stared at him. This wasn't funny. So he kind of slowed his laughter to a fade, coughed and quickly walked away.

Grrrrrrrrrrr

Don't worry Siu, you're in good company. The Gurkhas also believe that once a blade is drawn, it is not to be replaced until it has tasted blood. They will cut themselves with the blade if there is nobody available to stick it into.:twitchy:
