Don't let this happen to you.
The bike had developed a BB creak over the winter, so I thought I'd pop the cranks off, and grease things up. Well, the drive side crank was really tight, and loosening the allen screw (these are self-extracting Ultegras) succeeded only in forcing the dust cap partially out, stripping threads in the process.
The cranks didn't budge. I dunno. I guess whoever built the bike torqued the d@mn things on there too tight. Anyhow, if you're trying to remove your cranks, and they're acting pretty stubborn, watch the dust cap. If it moves (and the crank doesn't) stop immediately. The dust cap can be unscrewed separately, the allen screw removed, and a regular crank extraction tool used.
I'm not completely SOL. Most of the damage was to the dust cap threads. but I chose not to try to remove the crank. Hopefully I can remove the other crank and pull the BB with the drive side crank on. Or live with the creak.
