Fifty Plus (50+) - Well OK

This weekend is the running of the 5C: the Clandestine Clenbuterol Century Challenge Classic.

I'm the only one who calls it that. It's part of the Mad Dog series, sponsored by the local bike club, one of a year round series of centuries. They promote this as the "easiest century ever" because there is almost no climbing involved, just lots of wandering about in our fair city.

I was looking in the roadie forum for inspiration and was reading about one person's epic century at the age of 51.

Someone mentioned the http://www.granfondony.com/, which according to the web site will be a gran fondo in the best Italian tradition: so much so that they had Italian translations at the bottom of the pages.

A little pretentious, I think.

So, it looks like a great ride: competing with 10,000 cyclists (most of them pain in the ass Yankees) for 100 miles. I could talk my wife into NYC, I'm sure. Maybe there is a Motel 6 in lower east side we could stay at on the cheap.

Anyone heard of this? Maybe thinking about doing it?

Do yourself a favor and go to Vancouver for the Whistler Granfondo next year.

They foolishly but properly labeled the event as the "inaugural" and not as typically listed as "first annual". Just my pet peeve, but if you have a first annual and not a 2nd annual then the first time was just a lie.

Forget NY and the whole NE, you need a Vegas Vacation. Mesquite is a great place to stay, golf, get a massage and play some $2. Blackjack and eat some $7.99 Prime Rib. I hear they get their beef flown in from A. Contador's butcher!

Forget the Motel 6. The Gershwin is trendier and can be cheaper. It has rooms ranging from hostel type dorms to suites.

and I'll take Metric Man's paycheck for for going to NYC. In fact if anyone pays me to go, I'll treat them to pizza at Grimaldi's under the Brooklyn Bridge (in Brooklyn).

Do yourself a favor and go to Vancouver for the Whistler Granfondo next year.

Not for $200 for the ride, which doesn't include transportation back to Vancouver. And you'd think for that price they'd throw in a "free" souvenir jersey. No such luck, just a set of arm warmers, I heard. And I live in a town next to Vancouver.

I'll ride to Whistler on my own, before the skiers start driving up in November.

That looks interesting. My brother is in Mamaroneck and I can always stay with him. Maybe next year. I did the NYC century last year and while the terrain is easy there are so many lights and cross streets that it is a killer on the knees with all the stops and starts. Glad I did it once.
